This article examines approaches to the study of the mutual influence of gender, health and material well-being in the Russian context 1990-2000’s. The analysis is based on the data of research of Russian and foreign scholars on this issue. The main explanations of gender inequalities in health indicate, on the one hand, inequalities in social and economic positions, on the other hand, on distinctions in behavior concerning health of men and women. The article concludes on the necessity of gender-oriented social policy, which takes into account institutional factors of gender inequalities, including inequalities in health.
