Карьерные стратегии начинающих художников: реконструкция субъективных представлений
When building a career, an emerging artist faces the problem of choosing guidelines: recognition by the public, recognition by colleagues, commercial success, freedom of creativity. The variety of studies conducted in Russia and abroad show that the list of guidelines is not finite; it expands and changes depending on the cultural and socio-economic context of the environment in which the professional development of artists takes place. The purpose of this study was to explore the features of the careers of emerging artists in the Russian market for contemporary art. Two theories were used as a theoretical framework: the theory of fields of strategic action by N. Fligstein, which allows analyzing different types of social actors who are constantly struggling for a dominant position in the market, and the theory of capital by P. Bourdieu, on the basis of which various positions of market participants were identified in the system of coordinates of strategic fields. The study uses qualitative methods, including desk research and 18 semi-structured interviews with Russian artists. Four types of career strategies have been identified: achieving prestige in the gallery environment, expanding social capital and recognizability among the mass audience, focusing on creative business, and lack of a clear career strategy.
