This article is the first attempt to form, within the system of scientific research on urban planning law, an understanding of the humanitarian scientific heritage that created the foundational sources of modern urban planning theory. The author believes that a fairly wide range of readers interested in contemporary urban studies ideas should know who and how the interdisciplinary and currently relevant approaches in legal regulation of urban planning and city life in Russia originated. The scientific interests of the well-known Soviet scientist Alexey Elbrusovich Gutnov (1937–1986) were connected with the most important current issues in the theory of architecture and urban planning. His works stood out for the depth of research and significant practical use, which he actively implemented in his life as a designer. Essentially, they became the scientific basis for the formation and development of the modern branch of urban planning law.
