HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

Испанский стыд и производство нормы: К аффективной теории социального порядка

Логос. 2026. Т. 36. № 3. С. 1–16.
Khestanov R.

The article proposes an affective theory of social order, taking as its starting point the phenomenon of "Spanish shame" (ispanski styd) – the vicarious embarrassment experienced by a bystander witnessing another person's social failure. Tracing three competing etymological accounts of the expression, the author argues that the uncertainty of its origin is not a defect but an analytical resource: each version illuminates a distinct dimension of the phenomenon. Neurobiological evidence (Krach, Müller-Pinzler, Paulus) establishes that vicarious embarrassment activates the same neural structures as physical pain, and that its intensity correlates with social closeness to the norm-violator. Phenomenological analysis drawing on Gumbrecht's concept of "presence" identifies a fundamental temporal asymmetry: the bystander's bodily reaction precedes any articulation of the violated norm. From this emerges the article's central thesis: the norm does not precede the affect as its condition but arises as its retroactive rationalisation. Bringing together Lacan's theory of the gaze, Goffman's "expressive order", Elias's account of shame in the civilising process, Kotsko's sociology of awkwardness, and Sloterdijk's typology of Zynismus and Kynismus, the author constructs a comparative typology of strategies for managing norms through affect. Dostoevsky is read as a theorist of "preventive immunity" – a collective agreement of mutual non-observation that neutralises the normative shame mechanism before it fires. The analysis concludes with a diagnosis of post-truth as the collapse of a shared capacity for vicarious embarrassment – an affective, not merely epistemological, crisis. The name "Spanish shame" is interpreted as a cultural symptom: the appropriation of affect through its alienation.

Poddiakov A., / Series Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026. No. 7437658.
Clarity of knowledge and reasoning is necessary in many cases. Yet vagueness in scientific thinking related to surprise, curiosity, "ability to engage with not-knowing" (de Freitas) and abductive reasoning is also a crucially important source of scientific creativity which supplements combinatorial logic when dealing with the already known. Starting from studies by C. S. Peirce ...

Emotions in Meaning-Making: Toward a Sociological Theory of Cathexis
Kurakin D., Sociological forum 2025 P. 1–12
The role of emotion in meaning-making remains undertheorized in cultural sociology. Durkheim implied this constitutive role of affect in his theory ...
