Реализация курса ESP для студентов нелингвистических специальностей
This article discusses some important aspects of teaching the course "English for
Specific Purposes" (ESP) to students of non-linguistic specialties. The features of the ESP course
are analyzed in comparison with the traditional course "English for General Purposes" (GE).
The feasibility of using GE depending on the students’ initial language proficiency and its weight
in the ESP syllabus are specified. In case of insufficient proficiency in GE, some strategies for
improving educational outcomes in the ESP course are proposed: introduction of an elective
GE course, the use of the "code-switching" as an instructional tool, adaptation/"simplification"
of the language material. The versatility of an ESP teacher work in modern conditions is
emphasized. The work implies supplementing traditional teaching methods with the use of
digital resources and technologies. The classifications of the main functions of a teacher are
considered. Based on the analysis, a conclusion is made about the priority of the ESP course
in the framework of teaching English to students of non-linguistic specialties, which complies
with the aim of the government educational policy — training a qualified specialist capable of
solving practical problems.
