‘This Format Turned Each Presentation Into a Collaborative Effort to Assess the Robustness of the Study
On October 16, 2026, HSE ICEF hosted the Eighth International Conference on Applied Economics. Held fully on-site, the conference brought researchers from HSE University, the New Economic School, Wuhan University, and Shandong University together in Moscow. The programme was organised around three overarching themes— ‘Environment, Resources and Policy,’ ‘Migration, Labour, and Communication,’ and ‘Consumption, Behaviour, and Climate—offering an opportunity to see how similar economic mechanisms operate in China, Pakistan, the United States, and Russia.

'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

Invariants of Sochava’s Geosystem as a Basis for Landscape Mapping

Geography and Natural Resources. 2025. Vol. 46. No. S1. P. S15–S22.
A. S. Baybar, M. Yu. Puzachenko, R. B. Sandlersky

This article presents a methodology for landscape mapping based on the integration of long-term series of multispectral data and morphometric characteristics of the relief for various hierarchical levels. Using the example of the Central Forest Reserve and its adjacent territory, where both indigenous and anthropogenically modified geosystems are combined, it is shown that the identification of reflection invariants and relief order parameters allows us to obtain a display of landscape states that are stable in space and time. Verification of the landscape invariants on an extensive array of field data confirms their close relationship with the characteristics of the vegetation and soil cover. The classes obtained by segmenting the territory based on the ratio of landscape map invariants are well discriminated by both the original multispectral information and morphometric characteristics and field data, fully and objectively displaying the states of all geosystems in the study area. The results of the study demonstrate that the accumulation of remote-sensing data and the development of methods for their analysis open new opportunities for putting V.B. Sochava’s ideas about the dynamic nature of geosystems into practice. They transform the theoretical concept of invariants
into a fully developed methodology for analyzing landscape structure and into a practical toolkit for landscape
mapping and monitoring.

The concept of representative volume (REV, or RVE in material sciences) is the cornerstone of continuum scale models – one needs to get the volume big enough so that it could be represented with an averaged value (scalar, vector or tensorial, etc.). While REV should be established in all larger scale simulations, this is rarely ...

Батова О. Н., Савинецкая Л. Е., Проявка С. В. et al., Nature Conservation Research. Заповедная наука 2026 Т. 11 № 4 С. 25–39
Spermophilus suslicus is a threatened species listed in Red Data Books at all levels (from regional Red Data Books to the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species), and it currently requires special conservation activity. Over the past 30–50 years, its range has changed from continuous to mosaic, and its population has declined everywhere. In 2015, in Russia experimental ...

This work presents a new analytical solution of the shallow water theory for cylindrical propagation of long tsunami-like waves in the basin of variable depth. Considered model cases are related to tsunami wave propagation from an asteroid fallen into the sea, or from underwater volcanic eruptions. The corresponding bottom geometries represent radially symmetric obstacles such ...

Flamarion M., Didenkulova E., Pelinovsky E., Physics Letters A 2026 Vol. 598 Article 132218
In this letter, bipolar solitary wave interactions in the Schamel equation are revisited numerically. Two simulation settings are considered: repeated collisions in a periodic domain, and the interaction of a positive solitary wave with a train of negative polarity solitary waves of equal amplitude. In the first case, when the amplitudes are comparable, the larger ...

Integrating grazing intensity regulation and livestock mobility restoration: A practical test for China’s next-generation rangeland policies
Xue J., Luo Z., Chen Z. et al., Agriculture, Ecosystems and Environment 2026 Vol. 412 Article 110676
Rangeland degradation is a global environmental challenge; however, intense debate persists between equilibrium (focused on the negative effects of grazing intensity) and non-equilibrium (emphasizing livestock mobility for adapting to climate variability) theories in rangeland ecology. In recent years, an integrative theory advocating the “coexistence of equilibrium and non-equilibrium” has emerged to reconcile this debate. However, ...

Mogilevsky M. M., Shaposhnikov V., Chernyshov A. et al., Physics of Plasmas 2025 Vol. 32 P. 1–10
The ERG (Arase) satellite recently discovered a non-thermal hectometric continuum with a narrowband frequency structure. The mechanism behind the generation of this type of emission in the near-Earth plasma is still unknown. This study examines the potential use of electron cyclotron harmonics instability to explain the line structure of hectometric radio emissions for the first ...

Geometry-controlled engineering of the low-temperature proximity effect in normal metal–superconductor junctions
Tomayeva M., Vyacheslav D. Neverov, Andrey V. Krasavin et al., Beilstein Journal of Nanotechnology 2025 Vol. 16 P. 2265–2273
In the ballistic regime at finite temperatures, the proximity effect diminishes following an exponential pattern; however, at low or zero temperatures, this transition alters to a decay characterized by a power law with a dimensionality-dependent exponent. Here, we extend the current understanding of the proximity effect by exploring the role of normal metal–superconductor (NS) junction ...
