The paper is devoted to the history of Soviet discussions on the role of market and
commodity-money relations in the socialist economy. The influence of ideological and scientific
discourses on interpretations of market in the political economy of socialism are specified, regarding
alternative approaches towards commodity-money relations in the leading schools of thought of the
post-Stalin period – those of the academic Institute of Economics, of the Moscow state University, and
of CEMI (Central Economic Mathematical Institute). Four stages in interpretation of market concept
during the Soviet period are differentiated: Lenin’s epoch as a period of a radical turn from “market –
plan” antinomy to the understanding of necessity of their co-existence; Stalin’s epoch, when market was
conceived as an inimical element to be subordinated to the planned will of the state; Kosygin’s epoch,
when market began to be treated as an ally to plan, as an instrument of intensification of production;
Gorbachev’s epoch when the market gradually became a symbol of faith devaluating all other discourses.
