Due to a number of historical and structural reasons, research on language policy in Russia has not yet completely separated from sociolinguistics and has not become the subject of political science, as initially happened during the formation of an interdisciplinary project on language policy research in Western science. This situation in research is manifested, for example, in the absence of appropriate scientific structures in Russia. In this article I will focus on analysing the problem of interdisciplinarity in theories of language policy in world and Russian science in order to understand the nature of the interaction between research and practice of language policy in the country. I argue that in the current situation it is the unresolved problem of interdisciplinarity that predetermines the limited influence of Russian applied science on the actual practice of language policy. The limited influence of science, in turn, is expressed in the lack of institutionalization of language policy as a separate direction of state policy and a separate branch of public administration. In contexts of high uncertainty, the inclusion of public policy studies is critical to the success of interdisciplinary research projects studying language policy, as they allow for the consideration of variables arising from the contingency and unpredictability of political life.
