Scientists Create Open Dataset for Studying Concentration
A team of Russian researchers, including scientists from HSE University–St Petersburg, has developed the first open multimodal dataset containing recordings of brain activity, heart function, and video observations to help researchers understand what happens in the human brain during deep concentration. In the future, the dataset could accelerate the development of neural interfaces, rehabilitation technologies, and AI systems. The article has been published in Scientific Data.

‘Science Is Universal-It Knows No Borders
Fuad Aleskerov, Tenured Professor and Director of the International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis at HSE University, together with his colleagues, has developed methods of network analysis in bibliometrics that have made it possible to identify patterns in the appearance and citation of publications in academic journals, as well as their influence on each other. When one or a number of studies are frequently cited by a wide range of journals, this is an indicator that the research is of high quality. By contrast, extensive cross-citation within a limited group of journals increases the likelihood of identifying a network of predatory publications.

Scientists Propose Method for More Efficient Resource Use in Machine Learning
An international group of researchers, including mathematicians from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science, has provided a theoretical justification for a simple and computationally efficient method of estimating uncertainty in Stochastic Gradient Descent (SGD). The paper has been published on the scientific preprint server arXiv.org and presented at AISTATS 2026.

Cognitive engagement and video watching behaviours in learner-controlled environments: A cognitive load perspective
Gorbunova A., Getman A., Savelyev A. et al., Innovations in Education and Teaching International 2026 P. 1–13
Research on video-based learning often relies on behavioural indicators to infer engagement, yet it remains unclear whether these behaviours reflect meaningful cognitive engagement or mere activity. To address this gap the present study analysed relationships between time-on-video, click frequency, playback speed manipulation, and learners’ intrinsic, extraneous, and germane cognitive load in a learner-controlled video environment ...

Balancing autonomy and efficiency: how learner control shapes cognitive load and online learning outcomes
Gorbunova A., Kseniia Adamovich, Savelyev A. et al., Interactive Learning Environments 2026 Vol. 34 No. 4 P. 2609–2630
This study examines the tradeoff between learner autonomy and efficiency in optimizingonline instructional design. While learner control is known to enhance personalizationand engagement, it may also increase cognitive demands and learning time, potentially compromising efficiency. To investigate this issue, we conducted anexperimental study comparing low and high levels of learner control across keydimensions: pace, place, content, ...

How adding structure reduces complexity: more interconnections in concept maps do not increase cognitive load
Costley J., Anastasiia Kapuza, Gorbunova A. et al., Instructional Science 2025 Vol. 53 P. 1243–1262
Cognitive load theory describes the mechanisms for the transfer of information from human working memory to long-term memory. This theory posits that increasing the number of interactive elements, such as interconnections, may increase cognitive load. This study investigates the impact of interconnections in concept maps on cognitive load, exploring whether they act as interactive elements ...

Психофизиологические корреляты различных типов когнитивной нагрузки в мультимедийном обучении
Rybina E., Angelgardt A., Berezner T. et al.,

Exploring Attention, Cognitive Load and Brain Connectivity During Music Listening
Provorova A., Kulikova S., , in: Schemas In Language, Music, And Visual Cognition: Book of Abstracts.: Niš: Faculty of Philosophy, University of Nis, 2024. P. 35–35.
The purpose of this research was to investigate the cognitive mechanisms underlying the ability to read musical notations. Reading musical notations requires efficient integration of auditory and visual stimuli. Such integration is likely to be provided by means of functional connectivity between different brain regions. Furthermore, it should require maintaining a certain level of continuous ...

Pupillometry and autonomic nervous system responses to cognitive load and false feedback: an unsupervised machine learning approach
Evgeniia I. Alshanskaia, Portnova G., Liaukovich K. et al., Frontiers in Neuroscience 2024 Vol. 18 Article 1445697
Objectives: Pupil dilation is controlled both by sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system branches. We hypothesized that the dynamic of pupil size changes under cognitive load with additional false feedback can predict individual behavior along with heart rate variability (HRV) patterns and eye movements reflecting specific adaptability to cognitive stress. To test this, we employed an ...

Evgeniia I. Alshanskaia, Natalia A. Zhozhikashvili, Irina S. Polikanova et al., Frontiers in Psychiatry 2024 Vol. 15 Article 1355846
Introduction: Understanding the interplay between cardiovascular parameters, cognitive stress induced by increasing load, and mental well-being is vital for the development of integrated health strategies today. By monitoring physiological signals like electrocardiogram (ECG) and photoplethysmogram (PPG) in real time, researchers can discover how cognitive tasks influence both cardiovascular and mental health. Cardiac biomarkers resulting from ...

Bachurina V., Sushchinskaya S., Sharaev M. et al., Decision Support Systems 2022 Vol. 155 Article 113713
Predicting accuracy in cognitively challenging tasks has potential applications in education and industry. Task demand has been linked with increases in response time and variations in reaction time and eye-tracking metrics, however, machine learning research has not been used to predict performance on tasks with multiple levels of difficulty. We report data on adult participants ...

Multiple levels of mental attentional demand modulate peak saccade velocity and blink rate
Bachurina V., Arsalidou M., Heliyon 2022 Vol. 8 No. 1 Article e08826
Every day we mentally process new information that needs to be attended, encoded and retrieved. Processing demands depend on the amount of information and the mental attentional capacity of the individual.
