HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Thermo Optical Properties of 3D Photonic Wire Bonding Connecting Silicon Nitride Waveguides

P. 908–911.

This paper investigates the thermo-optical (TO) effect of misaligned polymer wire bonds (PWB) connecting planar silicon nitride waveguides. To characterize the fabricated de- vices, we measured the optical transmission through PWBs by changing the chip temperature in the range from 30◦C to 80◦C. We used an experimental setup, which included a tunable laser source in the 1510–1620nm range and a changeable temperature stage. By gradually changing the temperature of the sample, we measured the transmission parameter through the reference arm and the arm with PWB. We found that the TO coefficient equals 837pm/◦C, respectively, with the change resonance wavelength. The results can be used to design complex optical inter- connections inside and between chip and show the thermal stability of such interconnection.

Fominykh N., Fedosov I. S., Kryzhanovskaya N. et al., Письма в Журнал технической физики 2025 Т. 51 № 19 С. 11–14
The directed emission output of microdisk lasers through a coupled optical waveguide fabricated from the same heterostructure has been investigated. Disks with diameters of 30 and 40 µm containing an active region based on InGaAs/GaAs quantum dots were studied. To reduce absorption losses in the waveguide, a forward bias was applied to it. At a ...

3D Microstructures for Introducing Radiation into Photonic Integrated Circuits
Kolymagin D. A., Prokhodtsov A. I., Chubich D. A. et al., Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics 2024 Vol. 88 No. 12 P. 2016–2021
Photonic integrated circuits with improved optical input are used to obtain high-performance data transmission and processing systems. Transmitance spectra are studied for 3D microstructures fabricated via two-photon polymerization for inputting radiation in the range of 1480 to 1640 nm into photonic integrated circuits. Results were compared to transmittance of diffraction gratings. ...

An P. P., V. V. Kovalyuk, Y. G. Gladush et al., Applied Physics Letters 2024 Vol. 125 No. 20 Article 201101
The rapid development of photonic integrated circuits (PICs) and their applications in various fields of science and technology requires the creation of easy-to-manufacture high-speed integrated detectors. In this work, we fabricated and studied planar waveguide-integrated bolometers based on a thin film of single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) on the silicon nitride platform. This bolometer showed good ...

K.V. Shein, A.N. Lyubchak, Zharkova E. et al., St. Petersburg Polytechnical University Journal: Physics and Mathematics 2024 Vol. 17 No. 3.2 P. 241–245
Photonic integrated circuits (PIC) represent a promising platform for applications in the field of quantum technologies, such as quantum computing and cryptography. One of the key components for these applications is detectors based on thin superconducting films. Nevertheless, fabricating thin detectors atop a waveguide utilizing conventional superconducting materials acquired through magnetron sputtering presents a multifaceted ...

Shakhovoy R., Marius P., Sharoglazova V. et al., Physical Review A: Atomic, Molecular, and Optical physics 2023 Vol. 107 No. 1 Article 012616
Gain-switched lasers are in demand in numerous quantum applications, particularly in systems of quantum key distribution and in various optical quantum random number generators. The reason for this popularity is natural phase randomization between gain-switched laser pulses. The idea of such randomization has become so familiar that most authors use it without regard to the ...
