A Bilateral Interpreter in Sports and MusicEntertainment. Defining the Role and Examining the Ethical Aspects of Communication
This paper examines the role of a bilateral interpreter in two specific areas: sports and music entertainment, and the ethical aspects related to these areas of professional communication. The research in community interpreting shows that the role of an interpreter and the ethical conduct have not been fully studied and described so far. The theoretical framework established in the course of my PhD thesis on the use of strategies in bilateral interpretation in the Russian-Spanish language pair demonstrated that there has not been paid enough attention to these specific areas. We have therefore compiled a corpus of interpreted dialogues in the areas of sports and music entertainment as a basis for an empirical study. As a starting point, we analyze the position of bilateral interpreters and their ethical conduct. The results highlight that some bilateral interpreters are not fully aware of their roles and responsibilities. Furthermore, there is some confusion in the perception of a bilateral interpreter, an intercultural mediator and a personal assistant. This stems from the fact that the key functions of these three different professions tend to be mixed and, very often, misinterpreted in real-life situations of professional communication. Finally, we reflect on the future of bilateral interpreters in sports and music entertainment areas and their professional profile, as well as on the general tendencies in offline and remote bilateral interpretation, new formats and ways of management in the area.
