Умозрение в красках. Материалы Всероссийской научно-практической конференции
The article says that cautious, genuinely spiritual attitude to the Word is, perhaps, the only guarantee of understanding the value of its aesthetic features. The artistic possibilities of the word are infinitely enhanced when we speak about an allusive word or expression. The article considers several cases of use and function of allusions in E.T.A.Hoffman’s texts, all of these being the allusions to an artistic manner and style of famous painters. A special stress is laid on «Fantastic Portraits in the Manner of Callot». However, it is impossible to grasp the profundity of the allusive bond in question without the immediate visual acquaintance with the creative activity of Jacques Callot. The same is true in regard to Hoffman’s novel «Elixirs of Satan» and his fantastic novella «The Sandman» («Der Sandmann»). Here the literary text is enriched not only with verbal, but also with visual associations. Thus, we witness how – via an allusion – art and literature interact, and how different kinds of art intertwine and penetrate into each other.
