The standard translation for the Syriac word myatrūṯā is believed to be virtue (ἀρετή). The present article demonstrates that this is not so evident. The etymological analysis shows that the semantics of the stem YTR is constructed around the idea of tension (nervous or muscular). Syriac lexicographers registered some further developments, as the derivatives acquired meanings of abundance, benefit and convenience. The most sophisticated is the latest meaning of dignity out of which moral excellence has been extracted. Syro-Arabic lexicographers prefer to use words constructed upon the root fḍl thus reflecting the semantic shift. Greek word initially connected with military bravery has been chosen for the translation of myatrūṯā because of that later development. In the Syriac mystical literary Corpus the word myatrūṯā continued to be used in different ways. For the analysis Memre 1-6 fron the First Collection of Isaac have been chosen. Greek translators of St Isasac of Nineveh Patrikios and Abraamios inevitably used ἀρετή to render myatrūṯā. In the article a tentative semantical formalization for the word myatrūṯā has been performed. It falls into four vectors: ascetics in general (a); spiritual life (b); abundance (c) and, finally, acquired habit of good-doing (= virtue) (d). The results are preliminary but a somewhat more nuanced approach to the translation and understanding of the word in question seems to be a must.

The highly unstable orthography of the Middle Russian texts poses a challenge for their automatic processing. The Middle Russian subcorpus of the Russian National Corpus (RNC) includes documents written mainly between 1400 and 1700, when the variation in spelling was still a norm. The task of lexico-grammatical analysis is to assign a dictionary form (lemma), part of speech and grammatical tags to each word form in the corpus. Traditional methods of pos- and grammatical tagging assume that there can be (almost only) one possible string of characters representing the stem and ending of each grammatical form of the word. Since unstable orthography yields many-to-many mapping between word forms and grammatical annotations, morphological taggers perform poorly and need orthographic normalization preprocessing.

We use both relative and absolute normalization of orthographic representation. The relative normalization involves multiplying orthographic representations of stems and endings in the grammatical dictionary by regular rules. It is carried out at the level of (a) word endings; (b) nominative stems with regular variation, e.g. russk(ij) / russt(ij), keli(ja) / kel'(ja); (c) nominative stems of the Church Slavonic origin, e.g. odin- / edin-; (d) verb stems with prefixes; etc. The absolute normalization matches characters (character combinations) which alternate regularly in the corpus (e.g. o / ѡ 'omega', e / ѣ, шт / щ, жю / жу). The absolute normalization applies to both orthographic representations in the grammatical dictionary and word forms in the text.

This paper continues the series of publications on the morphology of the dialect of Staroshvedskoye (Sw. Gammalsvenskby), which is the only surviving Scandinavian dialect in the territory of the former Soviet Union. The village of Staroshvedskoye is located in the Kherson region, Ukraine. Its Swedish dialect historically belongs to the group of Swedish dialects of Estonia and goes back to the dialect of the island of Dago (Hiiumaa). Due to the lack of studies of the present-day dialect and because of the severe endangerment in which the dialect is currently situated, the most urgent task is to collect, classify, and publish the factual material. This paper introduces comprehensive material on nouns in the conservative variety of the present-day dialect. It lists all masculine nouns of type 2a together with their cognates from Estonian Swedish dialects; comments on the history of the forms are given as well. The sources for the material presented here are interviews with speakers of the conservative variety of the dialect recorded by the author during fieldwork in the village from 2004 to 2013. We plan to publish nouns of other types in later articles.

Маньков А. Е. Вестник Православного Свято-Тихоновского гуманитарного университета. Серия 3: Филология. 2014. № 39. С. 126-148.

In this paper we continue to publish materials for the dictionary of the present-day dialect of Staroshvedkoye (Gammalsvenskby), which is the only surviving Scandinavian dialect in the territory of the former Soviet Union. The present-day state of this dialect has not been described in linguistic literature. The only source of the factual material is oral interviews with speakers of the dialect recorded by the author during his trips to the village. The main objective of this work is to present material recorded in the interviews in the most complete way and to show the real state of the vocabulary and infl ection in the dialect. The entries include the following information: type of infl ection; translation; phrases, sentences or short texts illustrating the usage (with initials of the informants). In many cases full paradigms are given as well. They include all phonetic and morphological forms that have occurred in the interviews.

THE DIALECT OF GAMMALSVENSKBY: AN ATTEMPT AT COMPILING A DICTIONARY OF AN ENDANGERED LANGUAGE (A — BRIST-BÄIN)

The study of endangered languages is one of the most urgent tasks of linguistics today. This urgency results from the ongoing rapid decrease in the number of spoken languages. According to authoritative forecasts, during the 21th century from 50 to 90% of spoken languages will become extinct. A particularly tragic situation takes place when the language not only disappears but disappears undocumented and unexplored, i.e. forever and without a trace. Documenting endangered languages may thus be regarded as a moral duty of linguists. From a purely linguistic point of view the study of endangered languages can provide material that either changes or significantly corrects our knowledge of what is possible in human language. The development of present-day linguistics (and particularly that of linguistic typology) as well as the enrichment of its factual base is to a large extent related to describing unexplored languages.

The principal task in the study of an unexplored language is documenting it, i.e. collecting and making available the factual material. In this paper we begin to publish materials for the dictionary of the present-day dialect of Staroshvedkoye (Gammalsvenskby), which is the only surviving Scandinavian dialect in the territory of the former Soviet Union. The present-day state of this dialect has not been described in linguistic literature. In connection with this, the only source of the factual material is oral interviews with speakers of the dialect recorded by the author during his trips to the village in 2004-2013.

The main objective of this work is to present material recorded in the interviews in the most complete way and to show the real state of the vocabulary and inflection of the dialect. The entries include the following information: type of inflection; translation; phrases, sentences or short texts illustrating the usage (with initials of the informants). In many cases full paradigms are given as well. They include all phonetic and morphological forms that have occurred in the interviews.

It should be noted that in the course of the interviews, the informants started to cite unrecorded words, point to gaps and inaccuracies in the description, thus becoming participants of the research of their own language. On the whole, the study of the dialect has become possible only due to the cooperation and involvement of the informants and is to a large degree their accomplishment.

Рогожина А. А. Вестник Православного Свято-Тихоновского гуманитарного университета. Серия 3: Филология. 2014. № 5 (40). С. 78-88.

This article discusses one of the most peculiar elements of the Diocletianic tradition in Coptic hagiographical texts which is unattested in any other historical sources — namely, the special connection between Diocletian and his favourite god, Apollo. It appears that the authors of Coptic texts used for re-creating the historical setting of the events of the Great Persecution not only the material provided in the works of Christian historiographers, such as Eusebius, Lactantius and John Malalas, but also homiletic and hymnographic material found in other sources. The descriptions of the Diocletian’s connection with Apollo in the Coptic texts contradict the historical evidence (Diocletian’s tutelary deity was Zeus, not Apollo); however, they evince their authors’ knowledge of the references to the cult of Apollo at Antioch in the works of the two most popular Antiochian authors of later period — John Chrysostom and Severus of Antioch. Their homilies in honour of St Babylas of Antioch have been known in Egypt from the relatively early stage and have obviously influenced the Coptic perception of Antioch as a centre of the cult of Apollo; one might also see the how these later episodes — the story of Julian the Apostate and the relics of St Babylas — were re-imagined and re-introduced by Coptic hagiographers into the martyr passions of the Diocletianic period.
