'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Модели и методы управляемой трансгрессии медиа в условиях кризиса

Вестник Российского университета дружбы народов. Серия: Литературоведение, журналистика. 2023. Т. 28. № 4. С. 749–756.
Zykov S. V., Babkin E., Ulitin B.

Creation and transgression of mediaobjects is a complicated process that involves making difficult decisions. Under such conditions, the risk of media crises inevitably increases, for example, inadequate perception by the reader of information released by the media, etc. To avoid such crises, it is necessary to take into account all possible factors, both quantitative and qualitative, characterizing mediaobjects and media in general, as well as precise evaluation methods. The focus of the study is on developing a new approach to decision-making that will aid in the controlled transgression of mediaobjects during crisis situations. The method for making decisions based on a hierarchy of cross-disciplinary criteria that takes into account the concept of crisisology is proposed. Additionally, the authors suggest the use of a decision support software service that utilizes an ontology-based mechanism to adopt the user interface dynamically. The proposed method is universal and can be applied to assess different types of medical objects, reducing the likelihood of crisis situations (caused, among other things, by incorrect assessment of the reliability of information).

The energy transition has the potential to become an economic revolution. For countries that depend on hydrocarbon imports, the transition to low-carbon technologies has become not only a factor in energy supply, energy security, economic growth, and environmental protection, but also a factor influencing global markets. To examine this influence and assess the prospects for ...

Amplifying Latent Safety in Large Language Models via Gated Activation Steering
Roman Prosvirnin, Suslov A., Aleksei Soldatov et al., Computation 2026 Vol. 14 No. 10 Article 261
Abstract Safety-aligned language models often encode that a request is harmful yet still comply with it. We turn this gap between internal recognition and observable behavior into an inference-time defense. The proposed activation-steering method uses a multiplicative operator that amplifies the residual-stream component along a harm-recognition direction. Intervention strength scales with the model’s own assessment of ...

Aleksei Samarin, Nazarenko A., Nazarenko D. et al., Big Data and Cognitive Computing 2026 Vol. 10 No. 11 P. 1–52
Camera traps are a key tool for non-invasive wildlife monitoring, yet models trained on existing benchmarks often generalize poorly to new regions due to domain shift, class imbalance, and natural variability in illumination, season, and background. We introduce PACTraD, a benchmark of 116,973 annotated camera trap images collected in a protected area of the Baikal ...

This study explores the relationship between subjective well-being (SWB) and entrepreneurial intention (EI) among university students in Russia, where entrepreneurial engagement remains relatively low. It emphasizes the role of internal psychological drivers, such as SWB, willingness to take risks and entrepreneurial self-efficacy, rather than focusing solely on external factors. Drawing on the Theory of Planned ...

A Neural Network Approach for Generating Libration Point Orbits
Lev Pyatko, Sergey Aksenov, Regular and Chaotic Dynamics 2026 Vol. 31 No. 5 P. 794–813
In the circular restricted three-body problem, families of periodic and quasi-periodic orbits exist in the vicinity of the libration points and are of significant interest for practical applications. This work presents a neural network-based algorithm for orbit construction and station-keeping, applicable to both periodic and quasi-periodic orbits near collinear libration points. The method employs a ...

Early Career Gender Wage Gap in STEM: New Evidence from Administrative Data
Ksenia V. Rozhkova, Sergey Yu. Roshchin, Natalya K. Yemelina, Population and Economics 2026 Vol. 10 No. 3 P. 61–81
Increasing female representation in technical majors, traditionally associated with high earnings, is recognised as a mechanism for promoting gender equality in the labour market. However, if women quit STEM soon after graduation, increasing their proportion in relevant disciplines will not help reduce the gender wage gap. This paper provides new evidence of the ‘leaky pipeline’ ...

Brodetskiy G., Gerami V., Shidlovskii I. et al.,
