A Curated Dataset for Chemical Characterization of Heated Tobacco Product Aerosol
We addressed the task of chemical characterization of the aerosol emitted by heated tobacco products (HTPs) and of the smoke emitted by conventional/commercial cigarettes, usually adopted as a reference. Emphasis was placed on quantifying constituents for enabling the identification of novel compounds through targeted and untargeted analyses, and the evaluation of reductions in toxicant exposure under standardized smoking regimens. We curated and harmonized experimental data across studies, addressing methodological inconsistencies in puffing protocols, analytical approaches, reporting formats, and treatment of detection limits. The dataset, named HTP-AeroChem, covers data from both industry-funded and independent investigations, offering an aggregated resource for critical comparison of experimental quality, reproducibility, and data reliability. By consolidating and standardizing findings, this work provides a valuable resource to support regulatory assessments and risk evaluations of HTPs in comparison to combustible cigarettes.
