Amplifying Latent Safety in Large Language Models via Gated Activation Steering

Computation. 2026. Vol. 14. No. 10. Article 261.
Roman Prosvirnin, Suslov A., Aleksei Soldatov, Anna Kutishcheva, Litikov P., Bashun V.

Abstract

Safety-aligned language models often encode that a request is harmful yet still comply with it. We turn this gap between internal recognition and observable behavior into an inference-time defense. The proposed activation-steering method uses a multiplicative operator that amplifies the residual-stream component along a harm-recognition direction. Intervention strength scales with the model’s own assessment of the request. A second additive term steers activations along the refusal direction when harm is not internally recognized. Two linear probes computed from the model’s activations gate both components. The model weights remain unchanged, and inference requires neither fine-tuning nor calls to an external model. An external safety classifier is used only before deployment to provide training targets for the second probe. We evaluate five models from three families, Qwen3-1.7B, Qwen3-4B, Qwen3-8B, Gemma-2-9B-it, and Mistral-7B-Instruct, in BF16 and NF4. Successful attacks on SORRY-Bench decrease by 40 to 68%. Without hyperparameter retuning, the method removes 67 to 79% of the harmful responses on HarmBench. MMLU accuracy decreases by at most 0.7 percentage points, while over-refusal on lexically hazardous benign prompts increases by 4 to 8 points. Steered NF4 models produce 36 to 62% fewer harmful responses than their unmodified BF16 counterparts.

Weakly non-integrable solitary wave collisions in the modified Benjamin–Bona–Mahony equation
Flamarion M. V., Pelinovsky E., Wave Motion 2027 Vol. 148 Article 103867
We consider the interaction of two solitary waves in the modified Benjamin–Bona–Mahony (mBBM) equation in a regime where a small parameter measures the departure from the classical modified Korteweg–de Vries (mKdV) equation. A regular perturbation method is used to analyze the modification of the two-soliton wave field induced by the weak non-integrability of the mBBM equation. We show that, ...

An infinite series of Gorenstein local algebras failing the affine homogeneity property
Roman Avdeev, Yulia Zaitseva, Mediterranean Journal of Mathematics 2026 Vol. 23 No. 7 Article 224
We provide an infinite series of commutative finite-dimensional Gorenstein local algebras A_n for n ≥ 2. We give an elementary proof that the maximal ideal of every algebra A_n possesses a one-dimensional subspace that is different from the socle and invariant under the automorphism group of A_n. The latter implies that the algebras A_n fail ...

Gordin V. A., Efremenko D., Boundary-Layer Meteorology 2026 Vol. 192 No. 51
An inverse problem of reconstructing the turbulent exchange tensor from large archives of observed wind profiles within the Åkerblom–Ekman (A-E) model framework is investigated using high-vertical-resolution radiosonde observations. The reconstructed tensor provides improved agreement between modeled and observed wind profiles compared to classical formulations based on real turbulent exchange coefficient. Instead of the classical A-E ...

Parkina U., Rakhuba M., , in: 39th Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems (NeurIPS 2025).: NeurIPS, 2025. P. 71014–71041.
Recent studies suggest that context-aware low-rank approximation is a useful tool for compression and fine-tuning of modern large-scale neural networks. In this type of approximation, a norm is weighted by a matrix of input activations, significantly improving metrics over the unweighted case. Nevertheless, existing methods for neural networks suffer from numerical instabilities due to their ...
