Biologists Discover 'Molecular Fingerprint' of Preeclampsia
Researchers at HSE University employed a new method to model hypoxia in placental cells during pregnancies complicated by preeclampsia and identified molecular markers of tissue hypoxia. Since hypoxia is one of the key mechanisms underlying preeclampsia, these findings are important for a more accurate and timely diagnosis of the disease and for the development of effective treatment methods. The paper has been published in Placenta.

‘Speech, Facial Expressions, and Gestures Cannot Lie
Would you like to know whether a speaker’s trembling voice or an accidental gesture can give them away? At HSE University in Nizhny Novgorod, researchers are developing an algorithm that analyses speech, facial expressions, and gestures, and determines whether information is truthful with 92% accuracy. The project has applications ranging from forensic examination and bank recruitment to fundamental research. Anna Khomenko, head of the research group and Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Language and Brain at the HSE Faculty of Humanities in Nizhny Novgorod, explains how students and researchers are working together to create a corpus of video recordings, train a classifier, and prepare to introduce computer vision technology.

2025. Т. 16. № 1. С. 70–88.
Prusova I., Gorokhova A. S.

Objective. Analysis of the role of perceived threats in support of equal and unequal income distribution.

Background. Global crises affect people's socio-economic well-being by causing various fears. Internal threats, subjective perception of threats and societal threats lead to the support of attitudes that legitimize inequality in the economic sphere. Previous research did not examine post-Soviet countries where egalitarianism, along with meritocracy, could also represent a defense ideology. This induces the question about the role of perceived threats in support of different principles of income distribution in the Russian context.

Study design. The current study tested a model in which internal, societal threats, subjective perception of threats were included as predictors, support for equal and unequal distribution – as dependent variables, and socio-demographic characteristics – as control variables.

Participants. 582 participants in Russia (49% of men, 51% of women) aged from 18 to 74 years (M = 37,38; SD = 11,27) took part in the study.

Measurements. Study participants completed questionnaires on the fear of death (Wong et al.; Chistopol'skaya et al.), belief in a dangerous world and belief in a competitive world (Duckitt et al.; Gulevich et al.), support of equal or unequal income distribution (Kluegel & Smith; Prusova et al.), and financial threat scale to measure threats of socio-economic inequality and poverty (Marjanovic et al.; Prusova et al.).

Results. The results of the structural equation modeling showed the adequate fit of this model: χ2 (378) = 847; RMSEA = 0,046 [0,042; 0,050]; SRMR = 0,051; TLI = 0,937; CFI = 0,944. Fear of death and belief in a competitive world positively contribute to support of unequal income distribution, while belief in a dangerous world and threat of socio-economic inequality enhanced support for equality in income distribution.

Conclusions. The response to perceived threats is not universal and directly depends on the specifics of the threat. Internal threats actualize the desire for material profit, leading to support of unequal income distribution. Societal threats lead to support of equal income distribution as a guarantee of preserving social order under increased uncertainty.

Self-esteem and self-reported personality traits: When attitudes toward traits make a difference
Shchebetenko S., De Marchis G., / Series PsyArXiv "PsyArXiv". 2026.
Personality questionnaires do not directly record recurring conduct. Rather, they elicit task-bounded reports of personality attributions: how respondents characterise themselves using personality-descriptive content. From this perspective, established associations between self-esteem and self-reported personality may depend on the evaluative meaning attached to that content. We tested whether attitudes toward the Big Five traits moderated associations between self-esteem and corresponding personality reports ...

Lower resting-state EEG mean eigenvector centrality is associated with higher math anxiety
Pavlova A., Малых С. В., Frontiers in Human Neuroscience 2026 No. 20 Article 1843779
This study aimed to investigate resting-state neural correlates of math anxiety in high school students using a graph-theoretical approach. Sixty 10th-grade students (35 females; mean age = 16.15 years) participated in the study. Resting-state EEG data were acquired using a 32-channel wireless dry-sensor system (Cognionics Quick-32 series). Math anxiety was assessed using the Abbreviated Math Anxiety Scale. Mean ...

Hypergraphs from multivariate connectivity: caCOH-based EEG/MEG representation
Vlasenko D., Saranskaia I., Zakharov D., European Physical Journal: Special Topics 2026 P. 1–16
Hypergraphs provide a natural framework for representing neurophysiological interactions distributed across sets of sensors. A key methodological question is how hyperedges should be defined from frequency-resolved electroencephalography/magnetoencephalography (EEG/MEG) data. We demonstrate a construction strategy in which hyperedges are obtained from canonical coherence (caCOH), an extension of coherence that estimates coupling between multidimensional signal spaces. To ...

Gorokhova A. S., Prusova I.,
Although global crises cause a subjective perception of threats, which consequently mitigates subjective well-being, the level of life satisfaction remains high among Russians. The aim of the study was to examine the role of social beliefs in life satisfaction among supporters of equal/unequal income distribution. The current study tested a model in which social beliefs ...

Gallyamova A., Мир психологии.

С., Ananyeva O. A., Prusova I.,
Even though Russia is considered to be a country with a very high level of human development, gender inequality and prejudice against women continue to persist. Research on prejudice is often built on the Duckitt's Dual-Process Motivational model, which conceptualizes social dominance orientation and right-wing authoritarianism as mediators of the relationships between social beliefs (competitive ...
