'Cultural Studies Seeks to Understand What Lies Beneath the Surface of Everyday Things'
Maxim Zhiganov has been exploring different aspects of sound for many years—first in relation to his native Perm and then on a broader, global scale. In this interview for the HSE Young Scientists project, he talks about sound maps, the special issue of the journal Logos, and why it is important to make the familiar less clear and obvious.

At HSE University–St Petersburg, Experts Discuss How AI Changes Tourist Routes and Cultural Heritage
Neural networks are no longer simple travel assistants; now they decide what to include on the route and what to skip. Artificial intelligence changes how people perceive a place and shapes the image of tourist centres. At the II International Scientific and Practical Conference ’Information Technologies in the Preservation and Promotion of Cultural Heritage,’ researchers discussed who controls algorithmic solutions and in what ways, and whether authentic traditions get lost in them.

Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

Языковая ситуация в итальянской общине города Копер (Словения): данные полевого исследования

Славянский мир в третьем тысячелетии. 2022. Т. 17. № 1-2. С. 94–119.
Pivovarenko A., Пилипенко Г. П.

This paper discusses the current language situation among the Italian minority in Slo-venian Primorje in Koper. During the fi eld research conducted by the authors’ team, narratives in Italian were recorded from informants. Using discursive and structural-typolo gical methods of analysis, the authors reveal that the linguistic reality of modern Koper is perceived as constantly changing, and the Italian spontaneous speech of re-spondents is intertwined with borrowings from the surrounding South Slavic languages. The mo dern language situation is the result of historical changes in the Istria region during the twentieth century. In addition to insertions and quotations in Slovenian, items from the Croatian language are found, refl ecting the linguistic situation of the Yugo-slav period and the border position of the Slovenian Primorje. Special attention is paid to analysis of the language competence of Italians in the Slovenian language, among representatives of both the older and younger generations of students. In the Slovene language of Italians, a number of features peculiar to Slavic dialects in Italy are found, which allows us to discuss the same linguistic factors. It is possible to reconstruct the language competence of older people only partially on the basis of indirect evidence. There is a discrepancy between the rights guaranteed under the law (the use of the Italian language) and the linguistic reality faced by informants, which may be the result of both a decline in the prestige of Italian and of the small number of the Italian dias-pora, part of which is subject to language assimilation, including as a result of mixed marriages. The paper also discusses the role of the media and the linguistic landscape in the region.

The connection of the poetic form with the content is investigated. The free verse, developed by W. Whitman in the second half of the 19th century, took root in the USSR with difficulty. In modern Russian poetry, the free verse, while preserving the aura of Western poetic culture, often combines gender and political meanings, broadcasting ...

Semantic number agreement in Balkar
Podobryaev A., Ivlieva N., Glossa: a journal of general linguistics 2026 Vol. 11 No. 1 P. 1–25
Unlike many other Turkic languages, Balkar normally demonstrates obligatory subject-verb number agreement in finite clauses with 3rd person subjects: when a subject is plural-marked, so is the verb. However, there are cases when the subject is not overtly plural-marked, but the verb can be. We argue for an account where such facts are not reduced to any form ...

Budennaya E., Slovĕne 2026 Т. 1 С. 31–67
The article examines Old Russian anthroponyms with the suffix -ec-, originally conveying the meaning ‘less than X’. A diachronic corpus study of 11th–17th-century texts reveals that while this suffix lacked inherent pejorative connotations in Old Russian sources, contextual (adherent) pejoration is clearly observable. For pre-15th-century chronicles, two primary usage patterns are identified—1) characters with explicit negative evaluation, and 2) ...

Existing research indicates involvement of brain systems underpinning spatial abilities in processing emotive semantics in L1: positive emotions are associated with the right part of space, negative ones with the left. Some suggest similar sensorimotor activations in L1 and L2. Others indicate attenuated processing of L2 emotional words. Aims: We investigated differences in sensorimotor biases ...

Experience-dependent neuroplasticity in the hippocampus of bilingual young adults
Gallo F., Voits T., Rothman J. et al., eNeuro 2025 Vol. 12 No. 6 Article ENEURO.0128-25.2025
Models of experience-dependent neuroplasticity predict that the acquisition and extensive use of a new skill trigger a nonlinear trajectory of neurostructural modifications, where initial expansion of relevant brain areas subsequently (once the skill is acquired) gives way to volumetric renormalization. Such predictions also apply in the domain of language during learning and/or simultaneous management of ...

The umbrella term cognitive reserve-enhancing factors refers to those experiential and lifestyle factors (such as intellectual activities, regular physical exercise, healthy nutrition, educational attainment, etc.) that may help individuals to compensate for age-related neural deterioration, thus enabling them to maintain relatively stable cognitive functioning during senescence. In the last 10 years, mounting evidence has shown ...
