Understanding Russia’s foreign policy behavior in the context of the conflict in Ukraine

2023. Vol. 64. No. 1. P. 215–220.
Krasnyak O.

The beginning of the special military operation in Ukraine on 24 February 2022 caught a large part of the international community by surprise. However, International Relations scholars and Russian Studies scholars among them have long predicted that the sluggish Russian-Ukrainian conflict would undoubtedly enter a more active phase. Such perceptions were based on conceptualizing Russia’s foreign policy decisionmaking from historical, cultural, and political perspectives. Scholars have provided detailed explanations for Russia’s geopolitical and geoeconomic aspirations and for specific features of national identity, related to security perceptions.

This article examines how Russians conceptualize the groups most vulnerable to fake news. Drawing on 119 semi-structured interviews conducted in spring 2024, I find clear evidence of the third-person effect: participants believe that disinformation primarily threatens “others” who differ from them on salient dimensions. Age is the most common basis for dividing society into “us” ...

American politics has taken a dizzying turn since Donald Trump's return to the presidency. A suspicion arose: isn't this another turning point in the course of history, no less decisive than in the second half of the eighties of the last century? A reverse fracture. Gorbachev, with his new political thinking, willingly or unwittingly opened ...

The relatively uniform globalization that it was at the turn of the century has ended, but the world has not fragmented. Centralized management by certain rules is being replaced by self–organization for survival - a special one, from ...

In the context of global instability, the stability of national systems is crucial. And it depends on how much the state power is able to get the population to recognize its right to govern. In other words, to ensure legitimacy. Historically, this has happened in different ways - by force, by class hierarchy, by dynastic ...
