«Пришествие Святослава»: киевское граффито № 9 и его исторический контекст
In the new reading proposed by the authors, the inscription No. 9 from the St Sophia of Kiev becomes a valuable source for studying the church policy of Svyatoslav Yaroslavich during his four-year reign in Kiev. The payment of salary (ruga) to the clergy of the St Sophia Cathedral, established on the day Svyatoslav became a kievan prince, is interpreted, against the background of the corresponding Byzantine practice, as one of the acts aimed at overcoming possible opposition from church circles. Particular attention is paid to the date of Svyatoslav's arrival in Kiev, which happened on the eve of the Feast of the Lord's Entry into Jerusalem and is symbolically interpreted in the inscription as "the coming of Svyatoslav".
