The article explores the evolution of Pakistan–Russia relations in the aftermath of the Cold War, highlighting the transition from ideological rivalry to pragmatic cooperation. It traces the key milestones in bilateral ties, focusing on diplomacy, security, defense, and energy cooperation. The analysis emphasizes the role of the Afghan factor, which created a shared concern over terrorism and regional instability, thereby facilitating the development of common ground. The author considers energy security and trade projects, such as the TAPI pipeline and the Pakistan Stream gas project as major drivers of potential partnership. Another important dimension is the growing influence of China in Eurasia and South Asia, which acts as an additional catalyst for closer ties between Moscow and Islamabad through multilateral platforms such as the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). The study also pays attention to Pakistan’s strategic interest in diversifying its foreign relations and Russia’s ambition to broaden its presence in South Asia, balancing its traditional partnership with India.
