HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

The Regulatory Power of Social Expectations: Developing a Measurement Scale

International Journal of Sociology and Social Policy. 2023. Vol. 43. No. 5/6. P. 569–585.
Parfenova A., Maria Kozlova

This research is devoted to the study of social expectations, and the purpose of this paper is to elaborate the instrument of their measurement based on the main spheres of influence. The research was conducted using a mixed methodology: a series of semi-structured interviews and a survey. In the first stage, 15 interviews were conducted with middle-aged people, as the representatives of this age group are included in the widest range of areas in which social expectations are expressed. In the second phase, both online and offline surveys (256 participants) were conducted to test the social expectations scale designed and to confirm the assumptions made in the qualitative step. The qualitative phase highlighted the most important areas of social expectations, identifying how they can potentially influence individual behavior. As a result of the quantitative stage, the scale of social expectations was developed, and its prognostic function was confirmed. By testing the predictive power of social expectations on behavioral attitudes it was revealed that they influence primarily goal setting, motivation, public opinion orientation, emotional experience, and decision-making process. This study is the first attempt to construct a measurement tool for social expectations in order to predict individual behavioral attitudes

The dynamics of opinion in a group are of interest for a number of practical purposes. In particular, consensus helps and polarization of opinions hinders cohesive teamwork. Existing approaches for modeling opinion dynamics mostly do not take into account the dynamism of social relations in a group. This paper proposes an algorithm and a program ...

Social reality is undergoing rapid transformations, giving rise to new challenges for both social theory and practice. One of these much-discussed challenges is the so-called replicability crisis, a notion that describes the failure of the social sciences and humanities to verify established research findings with new empirical investigations. In the related debates, it is argued ...

Is societal progress muting the expressivity of negative emotions? Evidence from two cross-national studies
Yeung J. C., Lun V. M., Li L. M. et al., Journal of Cross-Cultural Psychology 2026 P. 1–30
Contemporary theories of emotion emphasize the dual role of emotions as both personal experiences and communicative signals during social interactions. However, the impact of macro-level societal structures on emotional expression remains underexplored. This study investigates the expression-experience discrepancy for self-reported emotions across nations, focusing on how societal development relates to this discrepancy, which captures expressivity. Using meta-analysis and multilevel modeling ...

How Norms Depend on the Presence and Status of Observers: The Relational Contingency of Everyday Behaviors in 90 Societies
Simpson B., Eriksson K., Vartanova I. et al., American Sociological Review 2026 Vol. 0 No. 0 P. 1–22
Norms are fundamental to social life, but basic questions about how they are affected by social context remain. Specifically, how do normative constraints depend on the presence and status of observers, and how do such relational contingencies vary across cultures? Using data from more than 25,000 individuals across 90 societies, we test several hypotheses linking ...

Intergroup links and aggregate effort in the social-norm model
Petrov I., Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination 2026 P. 1–12
This paper studies a social-norm model in which agents choose effort in response to their own productivity and the efforts of their neighbours. We analyse how links between groups with different productivity levels affect equilibrium effort and derive the intergroup linking intensity that maximises aggregate effort. We work in a stylised two-group stochastic block setting ...

Zhuravleva T., Afanasev K., Engelmann J. et al., / Series "SSRN Working Paper Series". 2026.
Extortionary ("harassment") bribery can persist even when widely condemned, consistent with a coordination problem sustained by beliefs about what others do and what others consider acceptable. We study whether a minimal institutional featurethe presence of a third-party monitor empowered to punish-shifts (i) normative expectations about extortion and compliance and (ii) empirical expectations about their prevalence. ...

Not more appropriate when unpunishable: normative expectations resist institutional change
Zhuravleva T., Afanasev K., Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination 2026 Vol. 21 P. 661–683
Punishment plays a crucial role in driving norm change by incentivizing compliance with evolving shared normative expectations. Punitive measures typically encompass two components: a communicative effect, which delineates inappropriate conduct, and an institutionalized procedure that facilitates sanction enforcement. This study specifically investigates the latter dimension, examining how the mere existence of a punishment institution influences ...

Afanasev K., Zhuravleva T., Hannum C., Journal of Economic Interaction and Coordination 2026 Vol. 21 P. 219–262
We are the first to examine the influence of empirical information on both actual behavior and normative expectations in the context of extortion. Everyday norms have become more permissive over time and vary across cultures
Eriksson K., Strimling P., Vartanova I. et al., Communications psychology 2025 Vol. 3 P. 1–14
Every social situation that people encounter in their daily lives comes with a set of unwritten rules about what behavior is considered appropriate or inappropriate. These everyday norms can vary across societies: some societies may have more permissive norms in general or for certain behaviors, or for certain behaviors in specific situations. In a preregistered survey of 25,422 ...
