The essay unpacks the Italian journey, which took place between 1775 and 1776, of the two young Russian counts Nikolaj Petrovič and Sergej Petrovič Rumyancev in the company of their bear-leader, the German journalist Friedrich Melchior von Grimm. Among the cities of the peninsula visited, Rome is undoubtedly the one that records the most significant consequences in terms of contacts with prominent personalities and cultural centers. Here the three travelers meet among others the French ambassador Cardinal François-Joachim de Bernis, the Ambassador of the Order of Malta Jacques-Laure Le Tonnelier, bailiff of Breteuil, the minimum friar François Jacquier and the main Russian agent operating in Rome Johann Friedrich Reiffenstein.
