Speaking as an Iconoclast: Another’s Voice in 9th-Century Hagiography
Travaux et Memoires. 2020. Vol. 24. No. 2. P. 359–376.
The article explores the phenomenon of “another’s speech” in ninth-century hagiography taking as a starting point the discrepancies between the languages of the two opposing parties in the iconoclast controversy. Three texts are taken into consideration: the Life of Stephen the Younger, the Life of the Patriarch Nikephoros, and the Life of Michael the Synkellos. The analysis shows that with most verisimilitude the iconoclast language is reproduced in the source most
remote chronologically from the events it reports, whereas the highest degree of distortion is characteristic of the earliest one.

Unlike many other Turkic languages, Balkar normally demonstrates obligatory subject-verb
number agreement in finite clauses with 3rd person subjects: when a subject is plural-marked,
so is the verb. However, there are cases when the subject is not overtly plural-marked, but the
verb can be. We argue for an account where such facts are not reduced to any form ...

The article examines Old Russian anthroponyms with the suffix -ec-, originally conveying the meaning ‘less than X’. A diachronic corpus study of
11th–17th-century texts reveals that while this suffix lacked inherent pejorative
connotations in Old Russian sources, contextual (adherent) pejoration is clearly
observable. For pre-15th-century chronicles, two primary usage patterns are
identified—1) characters with explicit negative evaluation, and 2) ...

The academic vocabulary used to describe the Iconoclastic Controversy in Byzantium includes both authentic Middle Greek lexemes and artificial terms coined in 16th–17th-century Western Europe, developed in the context of Reformation theological debates. The former category is largely represented by terms referring to the so-called Iconoclasts (εἰκονομάχοι, εἰκονοκλάσται, εἰκονοκαῦ[σ]ται), while the latter includes designations for ...

The chapter provides a reassessment of the two interpretative models used for the analysis of Palaeologan hagiography, the ‘old saints’ paradigm and the ‘metaphrasis’ paradigm. After a concise description of the sources, the argument develops in three steps.
