La dramaturgie moderne vietnamienne face aux influences françaises : le cas de Vũ Đình Long
The modernization of Vietnamese culture in the first decades of the 20th century also marks the beginning of modernism in the dramaturgy of the country. The initial period of theatrical innovation based on the western model is inseparable from the name of Vũ Đình Long, the founder of ‘spoken’ theatre in Vietnam. This article raises the problems of French influence in the dramaturgy of Vũ Đình Long at the level of form and ideas. The analysis embraces his original pieces as well as adaptations of the French ones, with specific emphasis on the multiform goal of their "Vietnamisation". The article also examines how the playwright uses French cultural borrowings which, on one hand, reflect the changes in Vietnamese modern society, and on the other hand, help to articulate eminently Vietnamese national ideas. Finally, the discourse on the works of Vũ Đình Long in the context of French influence may reveal an astonishing paradox — how a new genre in Vietnamese literature and theatre emerged from the adaptation of foreign modes.
