This volume brings together two novels by Avdotya Yakovlevna Panaeva (1820–1893), Trifles of Life (1854) and A Woman’s Lot (1862), neither of which has been republished since its first appearance. At a time of sweeping social change, Panaeva offered a unique perspective on the “woman question.” Her novels portray remarkable women whose right to happiness is thwarted by family despotism, class prejudice, and social indifference. Panaeva also exposes the hypocrisy of men whose progressive rhetoric about equality and freedom sometimes serves merely to conceal new forms of women’s oppression. Thanks to Panaeva’s powerful and deeply perceptive works, the landscape of the Russian literary canon acquires greater depth and complexity.
