At the beginning of the XVII century there have been many attempts to overcome Aristotelian physics. One of the trends was the so-called "Mosaic physics" based on Scripture, not on the texts of Aristotle. The “Physicae Synopsis” by J.A. Komensky shows one of the options for such overcoming, with all its difficulties and successes.

This paper examines the problem of piety in the philosophy of Aristotle. It is known that the piety (εὐσέβεια, ὁσιότης) was one of the most important virtues both in the ethos of ancient culture in general, and in philosophical discourse in particular. Moreover, the philosophical understanding of this virtue (starting with Pythagoras, Xenophanes, Heraclitus) often came ...

There were several lines of Aristotle’s reception in the Eastern Roman Empire. These were in different manners intermingled and interrelated, contributing to what can be termed Aristoteles Byzantinus. In the most general outline, one can speak of an “indirect” influence of Aristotle on Byzantine authors, that is, one that took place via Neoplatonism, and of a “direct” influence, that is, ...

An anonymous Italian quodlibet (ca. 1310) discusses the posthumous fate of Aristotle, with arguments pro and contra. In spite of the apparently decisive denial of his having any hope of paradise, the questio leads us down some other avenues of the history of ideas and mentalities of the scholastic age. During the 13th century, the ...

Abstract: This paper examines one attribute of the active intellect (νοῦς ποιητικός) — ἕξις (disposition, quality). In “De Anima” (III.) Aristotle characterizes νοῦς ποιητικός “as a kind of disposition (ὡς ἕξις τις), like light.” Why does Aristotle call the active intellect ἕξις? There are two difficulties here. () If ἕξις is some sort of quality or property (as ...

A standard ancient account of why one should accept the sphericity of the Earth may seem smooth and unproblematic. What is the origin of language? For Levinas, from Aristotle to von Humboldt, the tradition of Western metaphysics has understood language as a representation of reality, going beyond or transcending experience. In this way, language is a metaphor that substitutes for experience—and all language is originally metaphorical. Experience however, is essentially inexpressible—for it not only ...
