The mission is an important factor in the formation of geopolitical space. On the example of historical events of the XVI-XIX centuries, this article shows the role of the Orthodox mission in expanding the territory of the Russian state. The development of Western Siberia is seen as an expansion of the co-operative and southern boundaries, and church-canonical aspects of Russia’s awareness of itself as a northern power are noted. Analysis of the current situation indicates a stable relationship between the mission and geopolitics.
