AI literally comes to us from the future, not because it exists in some distant temporal reality, but because we, by attempting to construct an expected future through the experiences and affections evoked in us by the idea of AI, are unwittingly creating the conditions for the future's sudden arrival. No matter how much we try to prepare for its arrival, that's precisely why it will be different and will reach us in a place different from where we expect it. In other words, it is our imagination of as-yet-nonexistent technologies that generates new contexts for understanding knowledge and its place in society.
