The command of second language intonation is very important as misuse of certain intonation patterns may result in misunderstanding or even break of communication. Meanwhile acquiring intonation peculiarities of a foreign language is one of the most complicated and least investigated problems in linguistics. The difficulty lies mostly in the intonation function, not its form, though the latter can be a challenge as well. One of the possible solutions of the problem might be specially-designed exercises aimed at developing students’ communicative competence. A broader context contributes to the adequate perception of functional, modal and emotional aspects of intonation patterns.
