Physicists Discover What Happens Inside a Stable Vortex
Large vortices with characteristic spiral arms are often observed in the atmosphere and the ocean. Physicists from HSE University have explained how these structures form and why they retain their shape. The researchers found that velocities at points located along the same vortex arc remain correlated even over long distances. At the same time, this correlation weakens rapidly with increasing distance from the vortex centre. These differences help explain the formation of spiral arms and may improve models of atmospheric and oceanic currents. The findings have been published in Physical Review Fluids.

La universidad de quinta generación Un paradigma centrado en la persona

Navarra : Eunsa, 2026.
Gaete Sepulveda M. A.

Toward the Fifth-Generation University (5GU) is a work that proposes a transformative governance framework for institutions of higher education, capable of addressing the challenges of sustainability, digital reflexivity, and co-creation with multiple stakeholders. Drawing on a historical overview from University 1.0—focused on the preservation of knowledge—to University 5.0, the text presents a model centered on the individual and comprehensive sustainability as the cornerstones of the university’s mission.

The 5GU model is a transformative framework that integrates sustainability, co-creation with multiple stakeholders, and ethical leadership. It integrates teaching, research, community engagement, and stakeholder relations, aligning values and actions with social and environmental well-being. Based on a synthesis of the literature on governance, relational capital, the entrepreneurial university, and the quintuple helix innovation model, the work proposes a forward-looking roadmap that redefines the role of the university in the context of Industry 5.0 and Society 5.0.

Through a prospective analysis, systematic exploration of emerging trends (horizon scanning), and an integrative review of the literature, the book presents a seven-step governance cycle aligned with ESG (environmental, social, and governance) criteria. This cycle is accompanied by the identification of essential enabling conditions—such as ethical leadership and relational capital—that facilitate the effective implementation of the model and its sustainability over time, demonstrating how the 5GU principles (integrated sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and adaptive governance) translate into real-world practices.

The work concludes by offering guidance for future research aimed at validating and refining the model across different socioeconomic and cultural contexts. Its purpose is to guide universities toward a people-centered, resilient, and ethically sound governance paradigm that amplifies their social impact and makes a decisive contribution to sustainable development.
