HSE Researchers Show How Congenital Motor Disorders Affect Brain Development
Researchers from HSE University’s Institute for Cognitive Neuroscience have synthesised the findings of their previous studies on brain development in children with obstetric brachial plexus palsy and arthrogryposis. Their analysis shows that impaired motor function in early childhood not only limits children’s motor experience but also affects memory, categorical thinking, and information processing. The study has been published in Frontiers in Psychology.

Window into the Body: Scientists Develop Neural Network to Detect Risk of 15 Diseases from Retinal Images
Russian universities, with the participation of HSE University, Sber, and Z-union, have developed a neural network that can simultaneously assess the risk of 15 types of pathology from retinal photographs, including not only eye diseases but also cardiovascular conditions. The AI system can help clinicians detect potentially concerning changes at an early stage, identify signs reflecting the condition of retinal blood vessels, and determine whether a patient may need further examination. The paper has been published in Frontiers in Medicine.

'We Did Not Limit the Time for Questions'
The International Laboratory for Supercomputer Atomistic Modelling and Multi-Scale Analysis at HSE University held a major conference on molecular dynamics. Participants had the opportunity to attend all the presentations, while speakers were given as much time as they needed to answer questions. The HSE News Service interviewed Grigory Smirnov, Head of the Laboratory, and Genri Norman, Chief Research Fellow, about the conference preparations and the discussions it generated.

More than half of Russian adolescents use generative neural networks daily, and this figure continues to grow. Under these conditions, AI is becoming not just a tool but a cognitive partner for students, which requires a rethinking of existing educational practices. This systematic review synthesizes empirical data from studies conducted between 2014 and 2026 on the transformation of students’ cognitive processes under the influence of artificial intelligence (AI). The aim of the review is to analyze what changes in attention, memory, and thinking are documented in research on AI interaction, and based on this, to identify the conditions under which AI becomes a tool for cognitive development (human enhancement) rather than a factor contributing to cognitive debt. The analysis includes 30 sources selected according to the following methodology: a systematic search of PubMed, Google Scholar, Scopus, JSTOR, ScienceDirect, Academia.edu, and ResearchGate databases for the period 2014–2026, supplemented by manual searching and the snowball method. The analysis suggests that in the absence of specially designed pedagogical approaches, the use of AI is associated with risks (reduced sustained attention, metacognitive laziness, cognitive debt). At the same time, selected studies indicate that changing the interaction format can contribute to the strengthening of cognitive functions. Based on the review findings, practical principles for organizing the educational process with AI are proposed.

Emergence of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) is revolutionizing teaching and evaluation in higher education. Early adopters have already demonstrated how large language model (LLM) conversational agents can serve as on-demand tutors, yet empirical evidence regarding their effectiveness in facilitating conceptual learning in non-computational domains is scant. Based on constructivist learning theory, this paper presents a ...
