Doctoral Student at HSE University Reveals Hidden Layout of Ancient Parion
İdil Malgil, a researcher at HSE University, conducted a UAV-based LiDAR survey of the ancient Roman city of Parion in present-day Turkey. The high density of the scans allowed the team to detect subtle terrain features concealed beneath the ground and vegetation. The survey revealed traces of entire neighbourhoods, terraced structures, and walls that had remained invisible during routine excavations and could not be identified through aerial photography. The findings have been published in Ancient Civilizations from Scythia to Siberia.

Hybrid Competition under Fragmented Demand and Limited Consumer Choice
Bogatyrev R., Sandomirskaia M., / NRU Higher School of Economics. Series EC "Economics". 2026. No. 19(1).
This work develops a tractable model of price competition in fragmented markets where consumers consider both local and distant varieties, with cross-regional purchases subject to stochastic costs. Global competition and full localization emerge as polar cases; hybrid competition is not merely intermediate and exhibits distinctive features such as an endogenous price ceiling and non-monotonic entry ...

How Universal is the Cool Water Effect? Evidence from the Unlikely Case of Russia
Kravtsova M., Musaev A. U., Welzel C., / Series "SSRN Working Paper Series". 2026.
Elaborating on Welzel et al.'s "Cool Water Theory," our study zooms into the more limited (albeit still varied) framework conditions of Russia's huge territory. Within Russia's confines, we examine how the combination of moderately cool seasons with steady rain (i.e., Cool Water) affects sub-national areas' contemporary societal progress in two modernization indicators: material prosperity in ...

At the end of 2023, Russia updated its Strategy for Improving Financial Literacy and Developing Financial Culture Until 2030. Unlike the previous strategy, the current strategic goals include not only financial literacy but also financial culture. ‘Culture’ is normative and socially preferred behaviour. The updated strategy brings into focus the relationship between financial literacy and responsible financial behaviour. To explore this relationship, the authors rely on data from the All-Russian Survey of Consumer Finance (2020 and 2022).  Socially ...

Vorchik A., / SSRN. Social Science Research Network "Social Science Research Network". 2026.
This work is devoted to a theoretical explanation of the Easterlin paradox, according to which long-term economic growth does not make average level of people's happiness increasing. By happiness, we mean the intensity of emotions people experience while comparing their new income with its expected value, or the target income with its original value. In the first case, ...

Helen Selorm Wohoyie, Anikin V. A., Tomsk State University Journal of Philosophy, Sociology and Political Science 2026 Vol. 90 P. 204–211
Menstrual health serves as a critical litmus test for state intervention in contexts where women’s bodily experiences are historically shaped by stigma, cultural taboos, and structural violence. Drawing on Joseph Gusfield’s theory of social problems, this review traces the moral passage of menstruation in Ghana (1992–2025) from a privately managed, stigmatized phenomenon to a matter ...

How virtual urban green spaces influence stress and risk-taking
Dorri Sedeh S., Kosonogov V., Kerimova N. et al., Frontiers in Psychology 2026 Vol. 17 Article 1710257
Introduction:  As cities continue to grow, access to natural environments is becoming more limited, contributing to increased stress levels in urban populations. Panoramic 360° videos provide a creative and scalable means of simulating natural environments, potentially reducing stress in city residents under controlled settings. Here, we examined whether short immersive experiences in different urban environments support ...

M. O. Balaban, Vasilizhenko A. A., L. B. Karachurina et al., Regional Research of Russia 2026 Vol. 16 No. 1 P. 151–169
The population dynamics of settlements are determined by many different factors, including, as research shows, the availability of educational and healthcare facilities (i.e., basic social infrastructure) close to home. One can assume a two-way relationship: a decrease in population entails a reduction in the number of assigned students in schools and healthcare institutions and, as a result, the ...

Zamyatina N., Rusakov D., Evgeny V.,

Gallyamova A., Grigoryev D., Journal of Environmental Psychology 2026 Vol. 112 Article 103040

Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences
Ustyuzhanin V., / Series Econometrics "arxiv". 2026.
This paper proposes Covariate-Balanced Weighted Stacked Difference-in-Differences (CBWSDID), a design-based extension of weighted stacked DID for settings in which untreated trends may be conditionally rather than unconditionally parallel. The estimator separates within-subexperiment design adjustment from across-subexperiment aggregation: matching or weighting improves treated-control comparability within each stacked subexperiment, while the corrective stacked weights of Wing et ...
