Present review aims at acknowledging the main talks and presentations, hold at the first Oriental panel of the International Conference Actual Problems of Theory and History of Art. Borders and Horizons, which took place in Moscow in October, 2018.
The review analyses the international conference “Christian Monasticism from East to West: Monastic Traditions and Modernity in Europe”, organized in June 2015 by sociologists and theologians from the Universities of Graz (Austria), Turin (Italy), and Bucharest (Romania). The conference initiated a sociological reflection of different monastic traditions, and the role of monasteries in terms of the decline of trust in religious institutions. It raised the question of the dynamics of monasticism as a traditional institution in modern societies, not only in Europe, but also in Asia, Africa, and America. The scholarly discussion paid particular attention to the adaptation and resistance of religious traditions to social changes. Researchers from different countries have demonstrated the innovative potential of monasticism in the economic sphere (monasteries from different countries are pioneers in the development of the sector of organic products), the cultural sphere (the development of tourism and excursion services), and the religious sphere (the emergence of so-called “new religious communities”). Alongside traditional roles, monasteries have acquired new social roles. The secularization of the concept of “monasticism”, and its use in relation to the phenomenon of “consuming the tradition” apart from a religious context is stressed. The conference continued to develop the theme of an interdisciplinary approach to the study of religion. The position of a researcher and his or her professional identity, the issues of objectivity, and the idealization of the research subject are analyzed.

The author of the report analyses problems of legal regulation of the phenomena of mobbing and harassment in the Russian legislation, protective measures available under the Russian law and perspectives of the development of the regulation in this field.
During the Cold War, official Soviet institutions organized tens of exhibitions of an American figurative artist Rockwell Kent. These exhibitions, undertaken bypassing the official United States, demonstrate that promotion of Kent in the USSR was an exclusively Soviet enterprise. Examining the role of Soviet institutions in Kent’s success, the article sheds new light on the Soviet approach to the representation of American visual art during the Cold War.
Basing on unique findings from American and Russian archives, the article provides a comprehensive analysis of political and aesthetical factors, which predetermined Kent’s incredible popularity in the Soviet Union. Contextualizing the Soviet representation of Kent within relevant Cold War contexts, the article argues that Kent occupied a specific symbolic position in Soviet culture, as Soviet propaganda re-conceptualized the artist’s biography and established the Myth of Rockwell Kent. This myth served for legitimization of Soviet ideology and for anti-American propaganda.
This review examines the key issues of the international conference of the European Sociological Association (ESA) held in August 2015 in Prague (Czech Republic). It gives an outline of the plenary speech by A. Hochschild at the opening of the conference dedicated to the connection between emotions and political beliefs. The review focuses on the key debates in contemporary European sociology of religion that were held during the 15 sessions held by the research network of sociologists of religion of ESA. Such vectors as conflict, identity, religion and state are highlighted. Special attention is paid to gender issue, women priests and bisexual Christians. The diversity of types of social inequality in the context of various religions and regions of the world is discussed, in particular, in Europe and Near East. Reports by Russian sociologists of religion are indicated. Particular attention is given to the papers on monasticism as a role model for religious actors in Buddhism and Christianity. It is shown that institutional changes in monasticism may cause signal the changes in the role religion in society. The review examines a research on monasticism as a traditional institution in Christianity using the example of the Roman Catholic church in Switzerland and as an innovative institution in Buddhism using the case of a Buddhist community in Spain. The structure, history, current status and future academic plans of the ESA research network of the sociologists of religion are analyzed. The interdisciplinary potential of the sociology of religion and thematic areas connected with the study of religion by other research networks and are covered, including culture, migration and gender studies.
This publication is an continuation of the series of yearly Academic Papers, published since 2006, by the “Baltic Practice” interdisciplinary research Center, in a form of structured and edited collection of research papers of participants of the International HSE Summer School “Practice at the Baltic Sea” or simply “Baltic Practice”, submitted by the students of National Research University “Higher School of Economics”, as well undergraduate and graduate students from several European universities, complimented by the commentaries and research articles by research groups academic leaders and experts.
On the occasion of Doha being a cultural capital of the Middle East in 2010 and Istanbul being a cultural capital of Europe, Doha Orientalist museum is holding a symbolic exhibition “A Journey into the World of the Ottomans”, accompanied by a catalogue. Major part of the illustrated exhibition artworks are to come from the Orientalist museum own collection, the Rijksmuseum, as well as other major collections. The exhibition will bring together artists from the sixteenth century onwards, including Bernardino Campi, Jacopo Ligozzi, Nicolas Rycks, Jean-Baptiste Vanmour, Jean-Étienne Liotard, Antoine Ignace Melling, Francesco Hayez, John Frederick Lewis, Walter Gould, Alberto Pasini, Germain Fabius Brest, Oskar Kokoschka, Nikolai Kalmikoff, Vanessa Hodgkinson and Bas Princen. The article is devoted to the formation of the image of the pre-revolutionary history of Russia on the example of Yuri Tarich's film Wings of Serf (1926). In the first post-revolutionary decade, there was a departure from previous standards in the image of national history. Authors searched for new forms of screen representations of past events. Although the film inherits the tradition of depicting the king as a murderer and tyrant, the creators – director Yuri Tarich and screenwriter Victor Shklovsky – tried to transfer on screen revolutionary understanding of history. The film is influenced
by historical theory of Mikhail Pokrovsky, and Shklovsky introduced the economic element in the scenario as the main engine of the plot.
The avant-garde figures who came to cinema (Shklovsky, first of all, was a literary critic) came up with the rules of screenwriting craft on the go and challenged the boundaries of cinema's possibilities in practice. The purpose of Wings of Serf’s screenplay was to move away from the one-sided image of Ivan the Terrible and determine his actions as of economic basis. Shklovsky and Tarich developed the idea of the revolutionary remaking of the image of the past in their next work, the film version of Captain's Daughter.
The article covers the history of foreign screenings of Wings of Serf, focusing on the history of censorship bans and re-editing of the film for USA. The author shows in the article the possible influence of Wings of Serf on Ivan the Terrible by Sergei Eisenstein, which is implicitly present in both artistic and plot terms.
Despite success and foreign distribution, the movie was visually traditional, realistic, and researchers considered, most often, as the prologue before radical change of the relation to Ivan the Terrible in the thirties. The article shows how filmmakers of the first decade after the revolution used to work with historical material.
This collection of essays was published in a form of a catalogue for one of the propgrams screened at the Yamagata International Documentary Film Fstival in October 2019. The program entitled "The Creative Treatment of Grierson in Wartime Japan" was co-organized by the Yamagata International Documentary Film Festival and the National Film Archive of Japan and presented a broad variety of wartime Japanese documentaries as well as British and Soviet films that have influenced them. The collection of essays explores the development of wartime Japanese documentary cinema from variety of historical and theoretical perspectives.
The paper examines a rare explored phenomenon of Soviet cover design –a number of official releases produced by the only recording concern Melodija on the one hand, and so-called “tape-albums” became widespread among underground people in the late Soviet Union, on another.
