The article examines the phenomenon of sociocultural identity of the population in Russia-China border areas, the issues of its formation and preservation. A brief analysis of the stereotyped ideas about the "Chinese threat" and, un this context, the views of Russian, Western and Chinese scientists are presented. The authors note that the identification  of the specifics of interaction between bordering regional cultures of Russia and China determines both the potential  for their applying and the degree of their cultural transformation. Researching the complex nature of border region culture and the specifity of its basis for the formation of sociocultural identity, authors made  the conclusion about the necessity of border areas cultural significance actualization, which implies the desire of Russia border regions to improve the effectiveness of cross-border cooperation with China for solving mutual development problems.
