«Вторая память» в малых городах: типы краеведческой нейтральности и развитие локальной истории
The paper is intended to add detail to how "the second memory", alternative to the national historical narrative, works. Dwelling on the case of local history in small towns, author describes conditions of construction of the past, actors involved in the process, and attitudes that motivate them. As a result of analysis of interviews in Russian small towns, two types of local historians are distinguished. First is amateur local historians, who are guided by their sense of curiosity, attempt to provide "objective" accounts of events in the past, and pick up random historical topics and subjects. Actors belonging to the second type, activist local historians, set the goal of reinforcing local identity, drawing attention to the collective past, and commemorating tragic historical events. Both types are expressing political neutrality, but the latter one has the potential of mobilizing community and other actors in the field of local history.
