Фантастическая конференция, чудовищный доклад: формирование оценочных значений на базе русской признаковой лексики

The paper analyzes mechanisms of polarity meanings derivation in initially neutral Russian adjectives. We show that lexemes denoting physical qualities (vysokij ‘high’, mjagkij ‘soft’, gromkij ‘loud’, etc.) develop an evaluative component through a metaphorical meaning shift in combinations with nouns denoting a human being or a notion related to her/him (‘intellect’, ‘outlook’, ‘life’…). Adjectives with abstract meanings (udiviteljnyj ‘surprising’, iskljuchiteljnyj ‘exceptional’ and so on) become evaluative by means of implicature according to several models: ‘unreal’ => ‘good’, ‘frightening’ => ‘bad’, and some others.
