This paper investigates H.Marsh’s effect of social context on student’s mathematical self-concept, well-known as the “big-fish-little-pond” effect, employing Russian data. Author discovers that student’s self-concept is higher in a more successful social context. Studying in an advanced school enhances self-concept of low-achievers, confirming the “reflected glory” effect.
