Жозеф де Местр и адмирал П.В. Чичагов

The article presents a stady of the role of Josepf de Maistre in restoring the reputation of P.V. Chichagov after the failure of the Berezina operation in November 1812. Incisive de Maistre’s comments completely exonerating Chichagov and blaming Kutuzov both for his inaction during the stay of the Napoleon’s army in Russia and for his intrigues against Chichagov are critically analyzed and compared with the opinions of other contemporaries of the events, particularly, cellor N.A. Rumyantsev. According to Vorontsov Rumyantsev managed to create a collision between the interests of Chichagov and Kutuzov during the signing of the Bucharest Peace Treaty. However the main reason for the negative attitude of the Russian society to Chichagov in 1812 was not anyone’s ill will, but his reputation of a Galloman and Napoleon’s fan, for which Chichagov was known even before the 1812 war.
