Researchers Develop Methodology to Assess the Quality of Legal Representation in Criminal Proceedings
Having a good defence attorney in criminal proceedings can largely determine whether a defendant retains their freedom, health and good name. Researchers at HSE University propose a method for predicting an attorney’s performance based on the outcomes of their previous cases. The methodology takes into account the severity of the charges, the complexity of the cases, and the most likely outcome, drawing on judicial statistics.

2026. № 525. С. 56–66.
Tsygunova M.

This article examines examples of metaphorical creativity in the works of contemporary American writer Chuck Palahniuk, particularly in the context of describing psychoemotional states. The study examines twenty-six works by Palahniuk (twenty-three short stories and three novels) and identifies examples of metaphorical creativity in the conceptualization of mental states. The analysis focuses on Palahniuk's unconventional use of language, which enhances the reader's perception through a more accurate description of events and detailed psychoemotional portraits of characters. The material for the research included Palahniuk's novels Diary (2003), Tell-All (2010), and Beautiful You (2014), as well as a collection of twenty-three short stories, Make Something Up: Stories You Cannot Unread (2016). The study is based on a continuous sample of linguistic creativity with an emphasis on metaphorical expressions that describe the characters' psychoemotional states. The study identified 759 metaphors that provide insight into Palahniuk's innovative linguistic methods. These metaphors include traditional English-language metaphors, as well as Palahniuk's unique interpretations, demonstrating his distinctive linguistic personality. According to the results of the analysis, Chuck Palahniuk often uses such source domains as "SPLIT SELF" and "THING" to describe altered psychoemotional states and a person in these states. These domains emphasize both the mechanical and the utilitarian perception of people. The author also uses metonymy, which is manifested in the descriptions of characters through their possessions, emphasizing emotional and physical states. Orientational metaphors such as "PERIPHERY = BAD", and the inversion of normative metaphors such as "DOWN = GOOD", are used to deceive the reader's expectations and offer new perspectives on the conceptualization of psychoemotional states. Palahniuk's creative use of language serves not only as a stylistic device but primarily as a cognitive tool for studying and communicating complex psychological processes. His work illustrates the potential of linguistic creativity to enhance storytelling, thereby contributing to a richer and more engaging depiction of reality. The study highlights the importance of metaphorical creativity in literature, expanding its application in psychology and the diagnosis of mental conditions, thus emphasizing the practical significance of linguistic innovations. By analyzing Palahniuk's narrative techniques, the study deepens the understanding of his literary prowess and the role of linguistic creativity in human communication.

Oscillatory dynamics of inflectional processing: teasing apart defaultness and productivity effects in Russian verbs
Bursov K., Slioussar N., Kokhova M. et al., Brain and Language 2026 Vol. 275 Article 105719
Previous EEG studies demonstrated ample evidence for a major influence of morphological regularity on inflectional processing. However, regularity effects may be attributed to different properties of inflectional classes: to type frequency, to productivity, or to defaultness (assumed only in some models). In many languages, these factors cannot be teased apart, but it is possible in ...

Structurally, coordinate and subordinate clauses, as well as in-between cases, can be distinguished based on the degree of integration to the host ...
