Роль анализа языковых средств в развитии профессиональной коммуникативной компетенции студентов в рамках курса по нарративной медицине

The paper focuses on the study of language phenomena within the interdisciplinary paradigm and the notion of a narrative as one of the most popular ones for investigation in various fields. The purpose of the article is to single out the principles of the communicative competence development in the medical sphere, in which the area of narrative medicine (a discipline at the intersection of medicine, literary studies, and linguistics) has gained prominence. Based on a seminal work by an American medical specialist and literary scholar Rita Charon, the basic narrative medicine skills of close reading, close listening, and creative writing were highlighted as the ones that medical students develop while studying narrative medicine. Several scientific works from the field were analyzed with the aim of revealing creative language means that could help medical specialists to develop the communicative competence for a better interaction with a patient. It has been discovered that the development of empathy and communicative competence is best facilitated by the analysis of such language means as chronotope, type of narration, and metaphors. It was specified that metaphors play a crucial role in mastering narrative medicine skills due to their high degree of creativity and psychotherapeutic potential. This is connected with the possibility of getting closer to the patient’s inner world and feelings through an understanding of their unique idiolect.
