The article examines the formation of the Vietnam’s image in the USSR in the period of the First Indochina War. The research was conducted on the basis of publications in the Soviet magazines “Vokrug sveta”, “Krokodil” and “Ogonek”. The attention to the First Indochina War and Vietnam was intensified in the USSR after Moscow officially recognized the Democratic Republic of Vietnam. The image of Vietnam was associated with events of the conflicts in Indochina and was closely linked to the confrontation of two systems in the Cold War. At the same time the coverage of the First Indochina War issues let “discover” some aspects of history and culture of Vietnam for the Soviet society.
