HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Determination of solutions for chorus excitation mechanism characteristic equation by means of Van Allen Probe data analysis

Advances in Space Research. 2024. Vol. 74. P. 6264–6276.
Bespalov P. A., Olga N. Savina, Gleb M. Neshchetkin

In this paper, we focus on studying the quantitative characteristics of the excitation mechanism of chorus emissions closely related to the problem of relativistic electron flux formation in the radiation belts. The study is based on the processing of information accumulated by the Van Allen Probe spacecraft through the analysis of high-resolution data. We have chosen two typical examples of chorus emissions with spectral forms predominantly in the upper-frequency band (above half the electron cyclotron frequency) in the region of the local minimum of the magnetic field outside the plasmapause in the middle magnetosphere. We have developed and implemented a calculation algorithm that enables us to represent the results of wave field measurements in a high-resolution data channel in the form of a rectangular event matrix, each row of which corresponds to a cycle of the wave process. In the event matrix, we select the rows corresponding to fragments of chorus emissions that best characterize the natural source of short electromagnetic pulses. This method made it possible to determine the complex eigenvalues of the characteristic equation of the chorus emissions source. The proposed method for processing experimental information makes it possible to determine the main characteristics of the linear mechanism of chorus excitation. The results obtained in this way from observational data are in good agreement with relevant theory of chorus emissions excitation by amplifying noise electromagnetic pulses in a duct with a depleted density of a cold plasma.

Resonators based on nanoelectromechanical systems (NEMS) using two-dimensional (2D) materials with high-quality factors and excellent electrical control are critical for tunable coherent phonon dynamics, resonant sensors and wireless communications. However, their performance is fundamentally limited by the lack of a unified framework governing energy dissipation mechanisms and their electrical tunability. Here, we synergistically modulate both ...

Enhanced Terahertz Thermoelectricity Via Engineered Van Hove Singularities and Nernst Effect in Moiré Superlattices
Elesin L., Shilov A., Jana S. et al., Advanced Functional Materials 2026 P. 1–10
Thermoelectric materials, long explored for energy harvesting and thermal sensing, convert heat directly into electrical signals. Extending their application to the terahertz (THz) frequency range opens opportunities for low-noise, bias-free THz detection, yet conventional thermoelectrics lack the sensitivity required for practical devices. Thermoelectric coefficients can be strongly enhanced near van Hove singularities (VHS), though these ...

This paper investigates one possible solution to the problem of self-interference cancellation (SIC) arising in the design of in-band full-duplex (IBFD) communication systems. Self-interference cancellation is performed in the digital domain using multilayer nonlinear models adapted via gradient-based optimization. We perform a Monte Carlo analysis of the Ising model on many three-dimensional lattices. By means of finite-size scaling we obtain the critical points and determine the scaling dimensions. As expected, the critical exponents agree with the three-dimensional Ising universality class for all models. The irrelevant field, as revealed by the correction-to-scaling amplitudes, appears to ...

This background will pose a serious problem, when measuring spectral distortions of the cosmic microwave background, in particular, the mu-distortion, which presumably has an intensity of less than ...
