HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

New Working Memory Paradigm for Neuroimaging Testing of Visual and Verbal Modality under Different Attentional Involvement
Nikita Otstavnov, Ekaterina Voevodina, Semyon Mening et al., Psychology. Journal of the Higher School of Economics 2024 No. 3 P. 456–471
Working memory (WM) is a cognitive function essential for short-term maintenance of information in a highly accessible state to support goal-directed behavior. The classical behavioral model of WM includes a visuospatial sketchpad, a phonological loop and the central executive. Neuroimaging studies selectively targeted the activity associated with maintenance and processing of modality specific information. However, an experimental design is still missing that would ...

This article considers the problem of choosing a wing airfoil, taking into account the multi-purpose nature of light civilian aircraft. For a given class of aircraft, it is assumed that the flight is performed at airspeed less than the critical Mach number, this allows to omit the effect of compressibility on airfoil performance. We validate ...

Reputation and Information Aggregation
Catonini E., Stepanov S., Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization 2023 No. 208 P. 156–173
We analyze how reputation concerns of a partially informed decision maker affect her ability to extract information from reputation-concerned advisors. Too-high decision maker’s reputation concerns destroy her incentives to seek advice. However, when such concerns are low, she is tempted to solicit advice regardless of her private information, which can undermine advisors’ truth-telling incentives. The optimal ...
