Road Injuries Leading Cause of Death Among Men Aged 10 to 39
Worldwide, road injuries are the leading cause of death among males aged 10–39. An international team of researchers reached this conclusion as part of the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023, analysing data from 204 countries between 1990 and 2023. Their findings have been published in The Lancet Public Health, with HSE University Professor Vasily Vlassov listed among the collaborators.

The HSE International Centre of Decision Choice and Analysis studies a wide range of methods for analysing decision-making and possible scenarios for the development of natural, socio-economic, and political phenomena using various mathematical models. The application of advanced mathematical methods to forecasting helps to prevent negative outcomes and avoid erroneous decisions. The HSE News Service spoke to the centre’s director, Prof. Fuad Aleskerov, about its work.

Ranging Precision Comparison of Direct and Non-Line-of-Sight LiDAR Systems Based on SNSPD

Фотоника. 2026. Vol. 20. No. 6. P. 414–423.
Махлуф М., Ozhegov R., Elezov M., Goltsman G.

This paper compares the ranging precision of direct time-of-flight (dToF) and non-line-of-sight (NLOS) LiDAR architectures, both using a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD). Both systems operate at 1550 nm with a 50 ps pulsed laser and time-correlated single-photon counting (TCSPC). The dToF configuration achieved approximately 100 µm precision at 10 m, while the NLOS configuration achieved 500 µm precision for a hidden object 0.5 m behind a reflecting wall. The comparison shows that dToF provides superior precision due to the direct optical path, whereas NLOS suffers from additional temporal spread caused by multiple scattering. These results provide quantitative guidance for selecting the appropriate architecture based on application requirements.

Modeling weather-resilient laser communication: PPM performance with SNSPD in satellite links
Merzlinkin V., Khmelev A. V., Севрюков Д. О. et al., St. Petersburg Polytechnical University Journal: Physics and Mathematics 2025 No. 3 P. 205–209
Laser communication using satellites represents a promising avenue for data transmission in geographically distant areas without advanced infrastructure. This approach is characterized by its high transmission rate and low power requirements, providing substantial benefits over optical fiber and radio communication. However, the optical channel should exhibit greater transparency for light transmission, resulting in a severely restricted application of this technique for information ...

Photon-Counting Optical Time Domain Reflectometer Using Superconducting Nanowire Single Photon Detector Based on Time to Digital Converter
Mazen Makhlouf, Elezov M., Ozhegov R. et al., , in: Proceedings of the 2025 7th International Youth Conference on Radio Electronics, Electrical and Power Engineering (REEPE).: United States of America: IEEE, 2025. P. 1–5.
High-resolution photon-counting optical time-domain reflectometry (PC-OTDR) is crucial for the development of fiber-optic sensing and network diagnostics, allowing accurate fault location and long-haul performance optimization. A major step forward for OTDR is reported by combining a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) with a low-cost FPGA-based time-to-digital converter (TDC) to perform high-resolution measurements over 150 km ...

Махлуф М., Прикладная фотоника 2025 Т. 12 № 3 С. 40–55
The Optical Time-Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) plays a key role in the diagnostics of fiber-optic networks and distributed fiber-optic sensing systems, enabling precise fault localization and performance optimization of long-haul communication links. This work presents a significant advancement in OTDR technology, achieved through the integration of a superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) and a field-programmable gate ...

Nevzorov A., Iliia Venediktov, Vladislav Korovin et al., Applied Physics Letters 2025 Vol. 127 No. 17 Article 172602
We demonstrate an amorphous molybdenum–rhenium (MoRe) film on a thin-film lithium niobate substrate as an efficient superconducting nanowire single-photon detector (SNSPD) operating at T=2.5 K. MoRe films were deposited by DC magnetron sputtering with a composite target of 56 at. % Mo and 44 at. % Re on lithium niobate on insulator substrates at room ...

Mitigation of RF-Induced Critical Current Shifts in NbN Superconducting Nanowire Single-Photon Detectors for Trapped-Ion Readout
Suleimen Y., An P. P., Sedykh K. et al., Physical Review Applied - APS Journals 2026 Vol. 25 No. 4 Article 044091
The integration of superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) for state readout in trapped-ion quantum processors is hindered by their sensitivity to electromagnetic interference from ion-trapping radio-frequency (RF) fields. We demonstrate a comprehensive mitigation strategy for niobium nitride (NbN) SNSPDs that combines a conducting, optically transparent tin-doped indium oxide (ITO) shield with a nanowire of optimized ...

Yu.G. Vainer, Rovnyagina N. R., Budylin G. S. et al., International Journal of Molecular Sciences 2020 Vol. 21 P. 6169
Thioflavin T (ThT) assay is extensively used for studying fibrillation kinetics in vitro. However, the di erences in the time course of ThT fluorescence intensity and lifetime and other physical parameters of the system, such as particle size distribution, raise questions about the correct interpretation of the aggregation kinetics. In this work, we focused on the investigation of ...

We report on the design, fabrication and measurement of travelling-wave superconducting nanowire single-photon detectors (SNSPDs) integrated with polycrystalline diamond photonic circuits. We analyze their performance both in the near-infrared wavelength regime around 1600 nm and at 765 nm. Near-IR detection is important for compatibility with the telecommunication infrastructure, while operation in the visible wavelength range ...
