HSE Scientists Train Neural Network to 'Hear' Faults in Electric Motors
Researchers at the AI and Digital Science Institute of the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new method—the Signature-Guided Data Augmentation (SGDA) framework—that achieves 99% accuracy in motor fault detection and 86% accuracy in fault classification. The application of this approach can reduce industrial equipment repair costs, minimise downtime, and improve production safety. The study results have been published in Engineering Applications of Artificial Intelligence.

Is It Possible to Predict a Citys Life Based on the Shape of Its Neighbourhoods?
Is it possible to predict, based on the configuration of streets and buildings, where a café will open or where traffic congestion will occur? Participants in the Spatial Analysis and Modelling of Urban Processes research and study group use open data and machine learning to identify universal patterns. Alexander Sheludkov and Eduard Somov discuss the purpose of comparing cities, the need for new forms of urban statistics, and how open data is transforming approaches to urban studies.

Gate-tunable bolometer based on strongly coupled graphene mechanical resonators
Chen H., Zhao Z., Li W. et al., Optics Letters 2023 Vol. 48 No. 1 P. 81–84
Bolometers based on graphene have demonstrated outstanding performance with high sensitivity and short response time. In-situ adjustment of bolometers is very important in various applications, but it is still difficult to implement in many systems. Here we propose a gate-tunable bolometer based on two strongly-coupled graphene nanomechanical resonators. Both resonators are exposed to the same light field, and we can measure the ...

Copper Nanowires as Catalysts for CO Oxidation
Panov D., Bichkov V. Y., Tulenin Y. P. et al., Journal of Surface Investigation: X-Ray, Synchrotron and Neutron Techniques 2021 Vol. 15 No. 6 P. 1264–1269
It is shown that copper films with copper nanowires located on them demonstrate enhancement of the catalytic effect during copper-oxide oxidation. Nanowires of different types (cylindrical and conical ones and arrays between two surfaces) are compared. It is revealed that the largest effect (an increase in the degree of oxidation by 60–70%) is achieved in ...

Point Agglomeration of Nickel and Iron Nanowires Synthesized in the Pores of Track Membranes
Kovalets N. P., Panov D., Filippova Y. A. et al., Bulletin of the Russian Academy of Sciences: Physics 2021 No. 85 P. 1400–1403
Ni and Fe metal nanowires of different lengths are synthesized in nanoporous matrices of polyethylene terephthalate track membranes. As samples dry, point agglomeration of the ends of the nanowires is observed at lengths corresponding to theoretical estimates. Point contact of nanowires can be used in surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS). ...

WEI-JIE LI W. L., CHENG Z., KANG L. et al., Optics Express 2021 Vol. 29 No. 11 P. 16241–16248
Graphene has been considered as one of the best materials to implement mechanical resonators due to their excellent properties such as low mass, high quality factors and tunable resonant frequencies. Here we report the observation of phonon lasing induced by the photonthermal pressure in a few-layer graphene resonator at room temperature, where the graphene resonator and the silicon substrate ...

Superconducting insulators and localization of Cooper pairs
Arutyunov K., Lehtinen J. S., Radkevich A. A. et al., Communications Physics 2021 Vol. 4 Article 146
Rapid miniaturization of electronic devices and circuits demands profound understanding of fluctuation phenomena at the nanoscale. Superconducting nanowires – serving as important building blocks for such devices – may seriously suffer from fluctuations which tend to destroy long-range order and suppress superconductivity. In particular, quantum phase slips (QPS) proliferating at low temperatures may turn a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor into a resistor ...

Magnetic character of holmium atom adsorbed on platinum surface
Shapiro D.S., Shick A. B., Kolorenc J. et al., Scientific Reports 2017 Vol. 7 No. 1 P. 2751-1–2751-6
We address a recent controversy concerning the magnetic state of holmium adatom on platinum surface. Within a combination of the density functional theory (DFT) with the exact diagonalization (ED) of Anderson impurity model, the 〈Jz〉=0 paramagnetic ground state |J =8, Jz = ±8〉 is found. In anexternal magnetic field, this state is transformed to a spin-polarized state with 〈Jz〉≈ 6.7. We emphasize ...
