‘In the Age of Technology, It Is Interesting to Look into the Past and Think about What We Can Take from It
Polina Tabakova decided to apply for a Philology degree at HSE in Nizhny Novgorod because she grew up in Mari El and did not want to move far away from the Russian forests. In an interview for the Young Scientists of HSE University project, she spoke about the genre of the campus novel, the existential drama of Kolobok, and a blackout version of Eugene Onegin.

HSE Scientists Develop Method to Compress Large Language Models Without Losing Quality
Researchers from the AI and Digital Science Institute at the HSE Faculty of Computer Science have developed a new compression method for large language models such as GPT and LLaMA that reduces their size by 25–36% without additional training or significant loss of accuracy. This is the first approach to use mathematical transformations—specifically, rotations of model weights—to make models more amenable to compression with structured matrices. The study results have been published in ACL Findings 2025. The code is available on GitHub.

Approach to the Integral Assessment of Soils in Moscow Forest Parks in the Context of Ecosystem Services and Disservices
Ananyeva N. D., Ivashchenko K. V., Urabova S. A. et al., Почвоведение 2024 Т. 57 № 12 С. 2208–2221
Ecosystem services are a modern tool of environmental assessment, planning, and design, especially in large cities. The top layer (0–10 cm) of soddy-podzolic soils (Albic Retisols) was sampled in urban forest parks of Moscow (Aleshkino, Bitsa, Lesnaya experimental dacha, Troparevo, Lianozovo, and Yugo-Zapadny) and suburban (background) forests. In total, 30 samples (6 × 5 plots) ...

Laurinavichyute V., Nizamov S., Mirsky V. M., Analytical Chemistry 2025 Vol. 97 No. 2 P. 1160–1169
Single nanoparticle (NP) cyclic voltarefractometry (CVR), realized as wide-field surface plasmon resonance microscopy (SPRM) in combination with potential cycling, has been proposed and applied to the in situ study of TiO2 NPs. Electrochemical activity of TiO2 is mainly observed outside the electrochemical stability window of water. Therefore, the response of individual anatase (a-TiO2) and rutile (r-TiO2) NPs ...

Interrupted Dance of Five Heteroatoms: Reinventing Ozonolysis to Make Geminal Alkoxyhydroperoxides from C═N Bonds
Yaremenko I., Fomenkov D., Budekhin R. et al., Journal of Organic Chemistry 2024 Vol. 89 No. 8 P. 5699–5714
Four heteroatoms dance in the cascade of four pericyclic reactions initiated by ozonolysis of C═N bonds. Switching from imines to semicarbazones introduces the fifth heteroatom that slows this dance, delays reaching the thermodynamically favorable escape path, and allows efficient interception of carbonyl oxides (Criegee intermediates, CIs) by an external nucleophile. The new three-component reaction of ...

A three-factor stochastic model for forecasting production of energy materials
Bufalo M., Orlando G., Finance Research Letters 2023 Vol. 51 Article 103356
In this paper, we present a generalized stochastic three-factor model to forecast changes in the industrial production of energy materials. This approach is new as, by deriving a stochastic process correlated with its mean and volatility, we convert it into an uncorrelated auxiliary process through Lamperti transformations. We show that the proposed model can be ...

Syngas Instead of Hydrogen Gas as a Reducing Agent─A Strategy To Improve the Selectivity and Efficiency of Organometallic Catalysts
Podyacheva E., Afanasyev O., Ostrovskii V., ACS Catalysis 2022 Vol. 12 No. 9 P. 5145–5154
Catalytic reduction reactions play a major role in modern chemistry and are often based on hydrogen gas as a reducing agent. However, the high reactivity of hydrogen is often accompanied by low selectivity on the simple catalysts. Herein, we showed that the usage of syngas as a reducing agent can be a more efficient and ...
