СОВМЕСТНОЕ ПРОЕКТИРОВАНИЕ К НОВОЙ ЭКОЛОГИЧЕСКОЙ ПАРАДИГМЕ В ИСКУССТВЕ И ДИЗАЙНЕ
Today there is a rethinking of nature in contemporary art and design practices. Numerous studies define co-design with living organisms as a new ecological paradigm. The new practice acts as a solution to the catastrophic consequences of the industrial revolution and modern production methods. In the academic field, the morphology of the new ecological paradigm is hardly formed. Moreover, we observe blurred boundaries between the bio-inspired approach, based on imitation, imitating nature, and the bio-integrated one, using living materials and processes. Both approaches share the same scientific method, involving interdisciplinary design activities and collaborations between artists, designers, biologists and their respective scientific fields. Defining design terms with the prefix "bio" such as "mimicry", "inspiration" and "integration" becomes a key challenge. The paper will show how designers within the new ecological paradigm are already successfully working with living materials and trying to move beyond a human-centered understanding to design with nature. In describing the design process, we will draw on a concept by designer and MIT lab professor Neri Oxman that was proposed at the 2013 Biomimicry Summit in Boston. It complements the thinking of neomaterialist representatives on form and matter by calling for an engagement with organic materials. One of the aims is to recognize the range of problems associated with this practice and to demonstrate the changing role of the artist and designer, from product creation to bio-production and the shift in public recognition and thinking.
