American policy towards the People's Republic of China has undergone major changes over the past year. If the Indo-Pacific Strategy (February 2022) of the United States provided for "controlled competition" and even cooperation with China in some areas, then the National Security Strategy of the United States adopted in October 2022 designated China as America's enemy No. 1.
These changes in American policy in the Chinese direction were largely due to the conflict in Ukraine and the position taken by China in connection with this conflict. Washington failed to achieve either an unequivocal condemnation of the special military operation by Beijing, or its accession to the sanctions policy of the United States and its allies.
This position of the Chinese leadership on the Ukrainian issue is largely explained by the aggravation of US-Chinese relations in connection with the situation around Taiwan. Washington does not even rule out the possibility of a large-scale military conflict with China over Taiwan.
