The article treats with the military reforms of Fernando and Isabella the Catholic, carried out in 1495–1497. The author emphasizes that there is a serious lacuna in the Russian historical literature concerning research on the history of the Spanish Tercios as well as history of the Spanish army in general. In the article, the author analyzes the so-called «military ordinances» of Fernando II and concludes that the Catholic kings managed to lay the foundation of a new type of army, which eventually became the predecessor of the tercios.
